Hey,

I'm considering a 'small' upgrade (processor and motherboard), but haven't really been keeping up to date with newer hardware for a while. I've had a look around the forums etc, and this is what I've came up with, any advice would be greatly welcomed, as it's very likely I could just be wasting £300!

First of all, current set up is as follows:

Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower Case
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200AAKS
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz @ 3.2GHz
Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2)
Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R (Socket 775)
Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/DuCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)al DVI - x2 (4gb) @ 800MHz 4-4-4-12

not sure what part of the RAM identifies it!

Im considering buying:

Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

for a total price of £319.52.

Again, if anyone has any advice, or any overclocking results from the E8500 in a similar system, please post them here, they will be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers
Richy

The 8500 with this board, depending on how good this memory overclocks will probably do between 4 and 4.4ghz if your cooling is any close to TRUE or Tuniq.

On the other hand if you ask me, it's not worth it just yet, your E6600 still has a lot of power and is more than enough to run any newest games @ 3.2.

I would definitely pick 4850 or 4870.

Also the other upgrade you can look into is getting second HDD and put them in raid0.

or you can just buy new faster drive like the samsung spinpoint 750 or 1tb.

Maybe a better cooler ? TRUE ?

Rest looks fine.
