Worth upgrading?

Hello all.

I know this has been done to death but I'd like to know whether it'd be worth upgrading my GPU.

I currently have an 8800GT and was looking to replace it with a 4850.

Besides being that little bit quicker, the 4850 also offers s-video, which the GT does but I can't seem to get it to work on my TV (crt).

I'd be looking at getting like £50 for my GT and would have to stump up approx £70 for a nice 4850, would this be a worthwhile upgrade?

I've read posts, compared FPS etc and it's a mixed bag.

Some people rave about the 4850, others claim it's a meagre upgrade, also has Displayport taken off yet?

I read it was the next HDMi, quicker, backed by numerous companies (AMD and Intel included) but only a tiny amount of cards/monitors appear to support it.

Anyways, I'd like your opinions.

Thanks

Why not stump up a few extra £££ for the 4870 to make the upgrade more worthwhile? Price difference isn't that much now.

What resolution are you gaming at btw?

As we speak 1280x1024, is the difference between the 4870 and 4850 that vast?

I also like the idea of a single slot cooler.

No its not worth upgrading for 1280x1024 gaming, the differance at that res is quite small (8-10% increase). The larger the resolution the greater the performance boost (15-20%+ for 1920*1200)

Isn't displayport really for very high resolutions only (2560x1600, 4096x2160 etc) I know the macbook air can connect to a dell 30" using mini displayport.
Tbh HDMI and DVI is more than good enough for current technology and will be around for long time yet. Imagine the power needed to run crysis at 4096x2160

Another factor, do you think the 8800GT second hand value will diminish any more?

Not massivly, its still a great product for this generation of games/hardware.

I actually went for the 4870 rather than the 4850 (upgrading from the old 8800 GTS 320) as much for the dual slot cooling as the uplift in power. I like the idea of as much heat as possible being dumped out of the case directly, rather than having to rely on the rest of my case's cooling!

I had a 4850 (RMAd) and now have a 4870 (both 1Gb). Benchmarks tell me that 4870 is way better, but at 1680 x 1050 the 4850 is a belter. In real life when yer running around and not stopping to analyse sunsets, pieces of grass etc, gameplay feels equally as good. :)

my 8800gt handles TF2 and CoH fine at 1920x1200, crysis, no but neither will the 4850

the 4850 is about a 5-15% upgrade from the 8800gt

I wonder if Big Wayne will agree on the 4850 comment?. :D

I'm sure he moved from the 8800GT and seems to be pretty impressed with it.

I went from the 8800GTX to the 4870 and I can certainly notice the difference.
