currently have a core2duo e6420 running at 3.3Ghz in an Abit aw9d-Max..

4GB DDR2 and an ATI 4890

is it worth upgrading to an e8400 or e8500? (and overclocking them)

or am i better off waiting and saving up an upgrading the whole board / cpu / memory to a more upto date platform?

cheers!

I wouldn't bother upgrading to another dual-core, you're already nicely clocked where you are.

Going to a high quad core would be good, if you can find one cheap. But otherwise yes, I'd wait. :)

Id say no, save up, though what do you use your PC for? If its just gaming then definitely no, I think theres very few games out that can take advantage of more than 2 cores, or more than 3.4-3.6GHz so save your cash. If however you do encoding/rendering etc, it might be worth splashing on a quad

great stuff :) cheers guys!

been reading up on the board i have and most say its flaky and doesnt support quad core very well (especially overclocking) so id need to upgrade the whole lot if i was going quad!

i just use the pc for general internet surfing along with the odd game here and there.. use the server (amd 4600) for recording/encoding TV etc and it doesnt really matter how long it takes so that can stay as it is for now! :)

winters coming and ive just installed stalker clearsky and have halflife episode 2 and crysis on their way to play!

will try and see if i can eek a little more out of the e6420 for now and upgrade in the future

yeh as the others have said just stay with what you've got for now mate. No point in upgrading from a core 2 dual to another core 2 dual. Save up for now and when you really need to upgrade go i5/i7 as that will be a lot more beneficial :)

Another vote for sitting tight and saving. You might be looking at an i5 build down the line. They offer good gaming performance and reasonable value for money. Some of the boards can be had cheapish too.

Good luck
