Have a 7970 atm but sometimes feel its lacking . is a 290 enough of an upgrade or would i have to go to a 290x ? Or wait for new 3 series cards .

I like the idea of shadowplay . How does the 970 compare ?

Snaggle

I have a 7970 and also haven't made the jump yet. From what I've managed to glean from other users on here, it seems that most people have been reasonably happy with the move.

I went from a 280x to a 290 and i thought it was worth it but if you have the extra money a 970 or 290x would be better

Alright, a 7970 at 1300/1800 or so is about the same as a 290 at stock, probably some lower minimums and lower FPS on high res. But in general they're pretty much the same. If you can get a 290 and overclock it to 1200 or so, its definitely faster and id say its worth it. Just because it has much more grunt.

970 is a better card if not water cooling id say, as for shadowplay, AMD has AMD Replay which is basically the same thing.

i went from a 7950 boost oc to a 7970 to a g1 970 gtx. the difference is very noticeable. in some games close to twice as fast.

only downside i don't like the nvidia image quality compared to amd. everything else is very good.

a 970 gtx is faster than a 290 and 290x unless its at 4k. then its a couple of fps difference. thing is none of those cards are for 4k alone. so pointless.

Tricky time to upgrade tbh guys. There will be new cards from each vendor soon. And an ati 700 series isnt a very slow card. Im an nvidia owner myself, at the start i got caught up in the 970 buzz and thought about buying a pair. But realised, theyre not a worthwhile move from what i have. Sure the resale value of 780's has plummeted, but thats pc hardware for you.

No.

All cards out at the minute are pretty much equal depending on the games you play. Yes the amd ones do run hotter, use a tad more power. But, is the average gamer going to notice a big difference on screen in the games he plays, (most of which now are poorly coded ****). Sure benchers will notice the difference, but theyre in the minority of the high end card users who are a minority themselves.

And between the 970 and 290s, which one would the benchers prefer ;)?

Bit obvious, the 290's have unlocked voltage control. On nvidia cards you have to mess about with custom bios revisions to allow for overvolting. This isnt for everyone. As mentioned, the power use and heat generated by amd cards is off putting for some. Myself, im not fussed on power use, (this isnt the greenpeace forums) but the associated heat can bump up the temps of other components.

Just wait a bit longer imho, if you have come this far without an upgrade a couple more months should be easy. With new cards coming (Hopefully soon) they might be worth the wait or if not for those cards prices on current cards could be adjusted, so might be a better time to upgrade.

Tbh Boom, i have no real need to upgrade myself. But you know the old itch when you have a few quid spare. Heck earlier this evening i had the guts of an X99 setup in an ocuk order basket. Thing is too, the 4790k in sig is going great, bit of a mild oc of 4.7 on it. Reckon it could do a bit more. Sometimes i just splash the cash on crazy upgrades, either that or blow the money on the horses.:D

dont fancy two cards... seems a lot of hassle .. because my card is a refrence and single fan maybe a aftermarket cooler and overclock would do .. given its the noise more than anything

A 290 or GTX970 would be a noticeable upgrade. I went from a 7970 to a GTX780 and noticed a big improvement in most games at 1600p.
