I sold my main rig and packed up gaming almost 4 years ago. I've now got a little time back so dug out the system I built at the time of downgrading which has the following spec ...
I5 2550K
Asus Maximus V Gene
16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600
Palit GTX680 Jetstream
Corsair H100i
Corsair RM850
Samsung 840 EVO

Am I going to be struggling with this or is it worth upgrading / rebuilding?
It's been so long I'm not up to speed anymore.

Overclock the 2500k, and maybe upgrade to a GTX 1070, and your great for a good while yet. ;)

edit, even the gtx 680 is still good at 1080p ;)

agree with Lemin, the 2550k is still very very solid. How much were you looking to spend?

As much as needed really, every time I budget I go over anyway lol. If the 2550k is still a decent one then I may just update the monitor and clock the cpu slightly for now.

You have a good overclocking motherboard, so overclock. 4.5Ghz is easy on Sandybridge. Do it up. Get a GTX 1060 or 1070. You'll be good for a couple of years.

What will hold you back primarily is when PCIE 2.0 X16 becomes too narrow in terms of bandwidth to avoid bottlenecking modern graphics cards.

I upgraded from a 2600K to a 4790K but there is little difference in gaming.
