Worth using a custom fan curve? Zotac GTX 670 OC

Hi, I dont own a GTX670 but I have the 7870XT which can run loud at full speed :o
I use MSI's AfterBurner to set a customer fan curve

At idle, its near enough silent and when gaming/stress testing, the max temp I get is 65C with fan speed of ~65% which is tolerable but anything after that gets annoying :p

Hi guys,

I run a Zotac GTX 670 OC in the system on my sig. No overclocking on the CPU or Card (apart from the factory OC on the 670).

When running games my card maxes out at 80-85C which I know won't kill it however am I losing performance by letting it get up this high? I'm worried it may be thermo throttling. No issues in games but I just want to make sure I'm getting the most of my kit. At 85C the fan probably only hits around 55-60%.

If I do want to run a custom fan curve what is the best software to use? Is there any way for me to see what fan curve my card is using by default?

If it's fine to use at these temps with no issues I'd rather not increase the fan curve as the noise level is at a decent level at the moment.

Thanks

P.s the CPU and system is running fairly cool so case cooling isn't an issue.

Just my personal opinion but if my card was doing 80C plus then I would be looking for a replacement cooler rather than faff about with fan configuration.

Surely better to adjust the fan curve using MSI AB before even thinking about replacing the cooler varkanoid!! Perhaps just an extra 10% increase in fan speed could reduce temps significantly without the problems/cost of changing cooler.

I only game with headphones on so a loud fan under load doesnt really bother me, as the OP mentioned, better to keep temps down to avoid throttling.

The performance you are losing above 70c is negligible and wouldn't be noticeable even with a fps counter running in my opinion. Overclocking is a free upgrade and should be compulsory though :p

Just through experience I could never get the fan profile how I wanted. I game with headphones too. My 560ti could be heard above them with blower cooler. Tried loads of combinations with fan profile in Afterburner, gave up in end (not first time I had tried to setup fan profile with a card) and bought Gelid Icy Revision mk2 for £24.99 hooked upto to my fan controller. Knocked 20c off gaming temp and fans could be set to whatever I wanted. I dont see fitting an aftermarket cooler as a problem I often factor in the cost just in case the one fitted is terrible.

Now if possible I always have my gpu fans connected to the fan controller. So I can see the temps in afterburner, and the RPM display on my fan controller and there is a heat diode sat above the back of the card to get ambient temp there too and displays on fan controller.
