I'm about to upgrade in the next couple days/weeks and was wondering if the h80 is really worth it in comparison to a hyper 212+.

For example I recently installed a friends 3770k with a hyper 212+, and temps were 30~ idle and 60~ under prime 95.

('ll be using it for long renders and some live streaming of games)

I'd say just get the best air cooler you can, it don't really help with IB cpu's using water on them, not by much anyway

For that money, I'd save £20 or so by going with a high end air cooler and then have less noise and no potential reliability issues.

They should be able to match or beat the 212 using lower fan speeds.

Like Unclue Petey said, a high end air cooler is best.

Just put a 980 in place of a 920 under a Phanteks TC14PE. Started 2 sessions of Handbrake encoding simultaneously (one session will run 88-100% CPU, 2 is 98-100% CPU) and couldn't get the darn thing hotter than 54c... even when I unplugged the flippin' cooler fans!! :(

Looks like I'll be burning coal in the fireplace to keep warm :(

Did same 2x simultaneous encodes 920 took 23 minutes to do in 17 minutes, 26% faster... and me with no coal :(

Water if you like a silent rig. Air if noise is not an issue.
If you de-lid the cpu, water all the way.

Unless you go component built water cooling air cooling is quieter.

i7 3820 @4.75GHz
Temperature is delta.

H100 . . . . . . . . 41c 2500rpm. . . . . . . . 55dBA 2

SA SB-E Extreme 34c 2500rpm. . . . . . . . 56dBA 2x TY-143

Sorry my assumption was that you were talking about proper custom water cooling.

Not sealed units.

No assumption involved.

Maybe you need reading glasses.

I know I do. :D

Air can be just as quiet.

Indeed 5 GT's running at full speed make plenty of noise xD Silence and water isn't all it's meant to be I mean sure I can make mine very quiet by slowing them right down but you still hear the pump if you're listening for it.

With water systems you have same noise as from air systems. Both have radiators you blow air through to cool them.

But water systems also have a pump motor and pump making noise... and the sound of coolant moving through pump, lines and radiator.

Add it all up and in most cases the simple air cooler will be quieter than the more complex water cooler.

Sorry I disagree.

The same heat through a radiator with 4 times the surface area means you can dissipate that heat with slower fans which give less noise.

A pump with decent mountings is as good a silent if installed with care.

Having had high end air and custom water, its fair to say I have experience of both.

I still run my rig on custom water.

Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler

Dont know anything about water but my Phantek in the silverstone FT02 is very very quiet.

Oh and super cool varies between 21c-27c at idle and highest i have seen is 70c under Prime95 but that was with 1.28v for 4.5GHz on a 3770K and hyperthreading enabled, have got voltage down to 1.22v at the moment and temp on Prime 95 full load 63c..... still with 4.5GHz OC :D

Great job by Twst on cable management.

My air cooler fans idle at 700rpm same as case fans.. very quiet. i7 920 CPU @ 100% is 53c with fans @ 1000rpm... still not much noise.

I haven't used custom water in years. My experience ended 7-8 years ago. Yes, a very good expensive pump is almost silent. But bottom line here is as long as fans are spinning and moving air through radiator cores they are making some noise. Doesn't matter if it's water or heat pipe. Actually a heatpipe radiator is quieter than a water radiator... because the fins are not as closely fit and don'thave as many bends in them.

Both are good at doing the job.. and water can and does more cooling than air... But a top of the line custom water system costs hundreds... while a top of the line air costs a hundred.

And that doesn't even take into account the amount of work in fitting a good custom water system... heatsinks on CPU, motherboard, GPU, etc. Pipes everywhere. Radiators and fans and pump or pumps, tanks...

I appreciate a good custom water system and respect all the knowledge, time and money it takes to build one. But they are not silent any more than.. or less than.. an air system is.

Well

unless it's a passive air system. :D

clearly have different opinions of "silent" d5 vario mounted on a spongey thing etc gt's on a fan controller etc etc it's not silent sure it's quite a darn site quieter than my old system but not silent not that I care I almost always have headphones on.

I'm pretty sure If I wasn't in a lian li case it would be even quieter but still not convinced it would be real silence. I'll let you know when I do my new
Haswell bulid into a new case next sumnmer I suppose :)
