Worthwhile upgrade from 8800GTS640?

I have a BFG 8800 GTS 640 which is a tad jerky in Fallout3. Is there any upgrade I can make for £100 or so that will give me noticeable improvements in frame rate?

I game at 1920x1200 and have an E6600 processor overclocked to 3Ghz with 2gb Geil RAM.
 
ATI HD 4850 512 would offer a good performance increase,it can be had for a little over a £100 if you shop around.

It has less vram than your GTS,but don't let that put you off as it has excellent compression capabilities without sacrificing image quality,it'll be pushing it at 1920x1200 but it'll cope better than you're current card.

An ATI HD 4870 or Nvidia 260 GTX 216 would be ideal at your res but are generally around the £200/230 mark respectively,other than that maybe check out the second hand market for an 8800GT/GTX.

I agree that the 4850 would be better but from what I've read it's not really better enough to warrant an upgrade to it. A 4870 would be a better choice but once again, it's a lot of cash for slightly less than a lot of gain. Personally I'd wait it out until the next batch of cards, where you'll be able to get a 4950 or whatever with 4870ish performance for 4850ish pricing.
 
I'd sell the GTS and use the extra cash to track down a 2nd hand 260 (192sp version) which should exist around the £155-£165 mark.

That would be great at your resolution and a very big improvement over the GTS you have now.

the 8800gt and 9800gt are the same card. the 9800gt just has 3xsli support, wheras the 8800gt has 2xsli

I always wondered this - do the gpu companies (leadtek, bfg, etc) really check?

For instance, if you identified the b-grade card as having a purchase receipt would they still turn down the return?

I suppose if the card came with it's original 'first' receipt then all would be fine.

I think your OK with the manufacture. It's the retailer that washes their hands after 90 days or earlier.

Gainward are not the best people to deal with for RMA's. Better to always go through the Etailor.
 
I also have a 8800GTS-640 and use 1920*1200 but the performance is fine in Fallout 3 with Ultra settings and 4xAA, I have even edited the ini files to get more draw distance and modded the game with 1024 textures.
I do run my 8800GTS at 650/2000Mhz.

Have you overclocked your 8800GTS or is it stock?

I am also looking at a faster card and decided that getting a midrange card like a 4850 or GTX260 i'sn't worth it now and that I will wait for the die shrinked GTX260 later in the year to decide.

Exactly my experience/decision too - Though my GTS640 doesn't go past 620 core :/

I'm running at 1920x1200 and haven't had any problems in any games (admittedly I've not tried Crysis since getting this new monitor). I'd like a faster card but the only ones that appeal are the 280 or the 4870x2, and they're both far too much cash for me to justify the price.

Running games at the same res also,but with an 8800GTX,have considered upgrading,but with the GTX still performing so well in current games,I haven't been able to justify spending the money yet.

Nearly pulled the trigger on the XFX Black Edition GTX260/216 a month or so back,but the price shotup while I was deliberating,so I gave it a miss in the end.

I thinks it's testament to the strength of Nvidias 8xxxx series of cards,that we have been able to ignore a whole generation of GPU development,yet are still able to play the latest games at 19x12 with all the bells and whistles,surely that constitutes great value for money!
