Looking for an upgrade for a HD4890 for around the £100 mark.

Is there such a thing?

Don't care whether it is AMD or NVIDIA.

Has to be a worthwhile upgrade though, one with obvious improvement.

I'm out of touch with graphics technology and a bit overwhelmed by the numbering systems the companies use.

Cheers,

Nigel

Hi,

What cpu / overclock do you have, and what resolution do you run?

Assuming the cpu won't hold back a modern gpu too much, something like the following would be a nice upgrade for 'around' a hundred notes :

Just seen this in the clearance section (faster than the above two examples, but is B grade) :

To give you an idea of the ranking of graphics performance :

7850 > 650ti Boost > 7790 > 650ti > 7770 > 650 > 7750.

Thanks, that is really useful.

I have looked at some VGA Charts on the internet but because the HD4890 is so old I haven't been able to find anything that includes that and the newer cards.

In terms of hardware

CPU - AMD FX-6300
RAM - 8GB 1600MHz
Resolution - 1920x1080
No overclock

My hesitance is that the HD4890 doesn't struggle, but it can't take advantage of DirectX 11 and I suspect the graphics on games are set to medium.

So really want something where the improvement is noticeable if that is possible.

Cheers,

Nigel

Well, I'm not as much in the know about AMD cpu's, but I don't think you'll have any problems with the cards I've suggested (resolution will be fine). I'd be inclined to look into overclocking your cpu for the future. It will help you get more value from your graphics upgrade. :)

If I was in your shoes / budget, I'd aim for the 650ti Boost / 7790 / cheaper 7850's. Although most of the other cards would still be an upgrade, a 650ti Boost / 7790 / 7850 would deliver a nice improvement in performance; in some games it will be very noticeable indeed.

Sorry about all the edits, it's a habit of mine. :D
