ive been itching to upgrade to an i7 for a long long time.

how much better is a q9550 clocked at 4ghz to a i7 clocked at 4ghz

i mainly play games and sometimes convert avi's

thanks guy help me beat this itch
 
Obviously the i7 is going to be quicker. Personally i can't see the point to be honest. A Q9550 at 4Ghz is'nt exactly going to struggle.
 
its not struggling but ive had this q9550 for so long its seems slow to me now. i have seem graphics cards like mine (gtx480) with a few thousand more points in 3d mark vantage than mine is getting. so im thinking ive got a slight bottle neck.

also my card is clocked like there's were
 
In all honesty the only difference you will feel/see is in the convert time of the Avi's, as the I7 will comfortably stomp the q9550 in that.

But for general day to day stuff, and gaming, u won't spot a difference, so i agree with pasty.

Now if you said u do a lot of converting, encoding, decoding more then gaming, then yeh it would be worth it, but if its only every now and then, then stick with what you have for now, and await the newer stuff.
 
i only do the odd bit of converting.

think i will hold out for a while longer. just get this bad upgrade itch every now and then

especially when ive seen better GPU scores on the same GPU
 
Oh we all get it don't worry, the day after i built my I7 rig (came from E8400) i was already thinking what can i upgrade next lol. So far im resisting.

The extra points are probably due to the hyperthreading of the I7's or extra cores of X6's. If you compare system for system, i bet yours will be roughly the same as other exact systems.

Your system would comfortably beat mine in vantage, very nice GPU (im not jealous honest).
 
in vantage (correct me if im wrong) the only way the CPU will affect the GPU is if its bottle necking. they had an i7 and gtx480 and ive got a q9550 and a gtx480 and there GPU score was 2000 more than mine. so im thinking a overclocked gtx480 will be bottle necked by a q9550

P.S if you want to swap your setup for mine........ (joking mods)
