Would a 10 year old ethernet switch slow down internet?

I just realised that my internet slowdown (from 60mbit to around 20mbit) has coinceded with me buying an Xbox One, and even though the console is mostly turned off, I just remembered that to use it I had to unplug the router - PC ethernet cable and plug it into a netgear switch so I had connections for both PC and Xbox.

And the switch I have lying around was made in 2001, back when I had 56k.

It says 10/100 compatible but I get around 2MB/s.

Thoughts?

Are you sure its a switch and not a hub?

Like I am uploading a 1.6gb file to my ftp server right now which is on a 1gbit port, and I am getting 330kB/s average, I did the same before Christmas and I was getting 850kB/s average. Can't be a coincedence can it? My line profile has not changed according to BT and I am not capped according to Zen (on Unlimited Fibre anyway).

According to some searching, they are not made well and have "fake caps" inside, a lot of people struggle to get 2Mb out of it. Going to plug the ethernet straight into the PC as soon as this FTP is done... in 45 mins.

I have a GS605 sitting on my desk - never had any problems getting gigabit speeds out of it. Definitely not a 2001 switch, you sure its that and not the older version (very similiar numbers) thats squared rather than rounded edges and has a ! shaped warning light for collisions and is actually a hub and a poor one at that.

This one is rounded. Can get a pic if you like?

I unplugged the Xbox One and plugged the ethernet cable straight into my PC again...tested ftp upload and gone from 360kB/s to 950kB/s instantly. Can stream 1080p youtube again now too...definetly the switch.

You could have had a new one put it position by the time it's took you to get this far.

That 10/100 is for the ethernet ports, not for the WAN ports. It may not have the memory or CPU speed to handle modern broadband speeds.

Over the last decade I've replaced routers twice because they topped out at speeds lower than my upgraded broadband.

Why didnt you just do this in the first place before posting this thread

Because I was uploading a 2gb file via ftp at the time of the thread, I thought I might be able to get advice quicker. Instead I just get a load of smart arse comments.
