Would a 1070/1080 be a overkill?

Hi all I hope my thread title is correct?
I have at current an R9 390 with a i5 4670k running at 4ghz
8gb of team Vulcan DDR3 2400mhz dual channel ram
Gigabyte Z87-HD3 motherboard
And a Corsair TX 650w psu
All with a U2715h dell ultrasharp 1440p monitor

I've always gone AMD,and I love the 390 but I'm going Nvidia next time and these new cards sound fantastic.
I'm in no rush and its going to be Christmas or even possibly new year when il upgrade.
So my question really is would the new Nvidia cards be a bit of an overkill for my above system? Would it be more feasible to upgrade my CPU to a i7 first?
Thanks to all in advance for any replies to my noob questions :D

honestly I'd wait to see where the 480 - lands with price and performance - specially with beast mode rumors....its 2 weeks or 13 and half days.....worst case its 980 performance but price on the 1070 lowers a little......

best cast it OCs close to 1070 for a lot less and possibly lowers the 1070 in price......you can decide between the two

You might as well sit out this round of GPUs and save your pennies for next year's halo card and a monitor upgrade. I expect we'll be hearing whispers / strategic leaks / hype about them at that time anyway.

The 1080 seems to be (from benchmarks) a capable 4K card on its own; next year's cards will break 4k @60 fps, so look to be buying that new GPU and a high-refresh 4K monitor or a 21:9 5040x2160 monitor.

Theres just too much stuff coming out between now and next year, stuff could be worth buying or not, you might have a small lottery win and tripple 4K monitor and Quad SLI the new Titan and stuff have enough for a new 911 and house. Unless your buying now or within a month with the AMD launch then just sit and watch the news and markets, save and plan :)

I would seriously consider a 2560 x 1440, 144 hz monitor. I've got a ROG PG278Q and while expensive, it was well worth it. Well worth it, i cannot say that enough :)

nothing is overkill unless money is a concern, and next year you would have a completely new lineup to pick from, so you might be starting your research a bit too soon :D

Thanks for all your input guys..My U2715h is 2 months old so a 144hz monitor whilst sounding really nice isn't really a option for the foreseeable future mate,I could sell my Dell but then extra money would have to be found for the Gsync upgrade
A CPU upgrade (except a i7) then requires a new MB,which means more money spent, see where all this is going guys.
I'd end up having to purchase a completely new system which I don't really wanna do.
I agree totally..I've probably asked the question a bit too prematurely, what would your answers be guys if I asked the original question and said I was only going Nvidia and was purchasing in say 4-8 weeks time, with my current system, would the 1080 or even 1070 be ok for my i5 ,thanks for taking the time to respond fellas

4 GHz is a pretty low overclock :P Any reason you haven't clocked it higher?

It's been a while since I tried iBSOD but I think I tried it at 4.2 and it wouldn't boot,I use a corsair H50 cooler for the CPU,do I just OC it in my bios? !then what about the voltages If so that's what I did pal

Nvidia 1-2 months time, 1440p monitor, money no issue but don't want to go crazy and SLI+new PSU then 1080GTX. If the price of a 1080 will leave you eating Value beans for the next 6 months then 1070GTX.

So what's your money situation? Can you afford a https://www.overclockers.co.uk/kfa2...dr5x-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-088-kf.html

or another brand of similar cost?

Money's ok mate,I've already been offered £120 for my R9 390 (I could probably get a few more quid for it) I also have a R9 270x I could get a few quid for aswell but I'd probably go MSI,or Sapphire or Gigabyte anyway pal

Yeah you increase the multiplier and cpu vcore in BIOS. Quick guide I found:

An Easy 4.4/4.5/4.6GHz Template:
Here are the settings I used; you can use them as a template for your settings:
Profile #1 Basic Profile:
CPU VRIN Override LLC: Set to Extreme (this is to make sure VIN doesn’t droop)
CPU VRIN Override Voltage: 1.7-2.0v (reduce if temperatures too high is causing instability, increase if temperatures are fine and you are unstable)
VCore: 1.24-1.34v
Ring Voltage: 1.15 or 1.2v
CPU Multiplier: 44x-46x
BCLK: Auto
Turbo: Auto
C1E, C3, C6/C7, and EIST: All Disabled
(There is a table in Step #1 which describes the behavior or different power saving features and what to enable/disable to get the behavior you want.)
