Would a £250 GFX card be overkill on this system?

Thanks for the input guys. I dont plan on upgrading my monitor any time soon as i've only had it 12 months or so. Plus its a Dell IPS panel so its really quite nice.

I do, however, plan on upgrading the rest of my system next year to an i5 rig or equivalent.

bulldozer and sandybridge/(2011 socket?) will be out by the time you upgrade next year.
Or he could wait for people tossing out their i5/i7 and get them cheap 2nd hand and save some bucks :D

This is what I'm considering doing, depending on the performance difference between the new platforms and the i5/i7.

I'd buy that over a 470, it consumes a lot less power, less heat and more performance.
6870 does consume less power and run cooler than the GTX470, but to say it offer more performance...you are misleading the OP.

Oh and an update on the Arctic Freezer Pro 7 CPU cooler.

I have just ditched my old nforce motherboard and move my Q6600 to onto a Asus P5Q Deluxe and gotten a new Cooler Master 690 II Adanced case. I have now overclocked my Q6600 to 3.6GHz using 1.48vcore, and my max temp in prime95 doesn't even go beyond 65C.

I wonder where has PhoenixUK gone to hiding after saying those rubbish about AC7 being crap :D

I've been out of the loop for a couple of years with all things hardware related and i'm thinking of upgrading since the latest FPS games are a bit poo on my current system (see sig).

I was wondering if buying a new GFX card like a Nvidia 470 would be overkill if i left everything else as it is. Would a 470 only be worth the money if I upgraded my CPU and ram as well? My CPU isn't overclocked (never OC'd anything before) but i have a pretty decent case with good cooling potential so it's something i could look into.

I'm worried my RAM wont be up to the task of OC'ing though since it only cost about £40 when new over 18 months ago.

Anyhoo, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I replaced my 4850 with a 6870 yesterday, impressed with the performance so far, although I've only the 4850 to compare it against.

6870, 470 both will make a huge difference IMO. Maybe even consider the 460 1gb or a 6850.

Roughly speaking, GTX460 and 6850 at stock is around twice as fast a 4850/GTS250.
