Would a 780ti be sufficient for 1440p 60fps+

Hi Guys

Trying to decide between 1080p and 1440p (I would go for a 120hz 1080p or an 'overclockable' 1440p)

My query is however after doing some research would a 780ti (possibly EVGA SC ACX) be able to run most games at decent settings? (don't really need MSAA)

Looking around some people say games like Crysis 2, Metro, Bioshock are unplayable at 1440p even with a single 780?

This is all personal preference though as to what 'unplayable' is so im wondering what peoples experiences are on here with 1440p and a single gpu? (not a titan)

780ti for 1440p or 1080p what would be the better gaming experience?

See if 1080p is best then some will then say 780ti is overkill so then you start looking at other options...

Spose it would do a good job of maxing out a 120hz monitor!

I have an overclocked 1440P monitor. I just run it at 80 Fps as trying to maintain it at 90 fps is hard (depending on game). I have to compromise some of my BF4 settings with my stock 780. I imagine a ti would still require some compromises especially if you want to maintain an over clocked 80 or 90 fps (forget about 120 as that is only feasible with SLI).

Bioshock infinaite is not a strain on the GPU btw compared to Crysis 3, BF4, and Metro Last Light. Those are basically the most GPU intensive games out right now.

Depends on if you are after image quality or a fast panel but is generally poorer quality, less accurate colours and requires manually tweaking or ICC profiles. If you play a lot of shooters a 120Hz+ 1080 panel would be ideal for a single 780 ti and maximum game settings. 1440 though with Crysis 3 or Last Night your minimum fps is going to be 30fps which isn't good enough in my opinion unless you step back on quality settings or block the GPU and overclock like crazy. BioShock titles aren't that demanding and will look great 1440. Generally for 1440/1600 you should ideally have two graphics cards, then you can buy a 1440 display and use maximum details.

I play 50/50 online/offline and would like a smoother display but 1080 is limiting for productivity and would instead sacrifice some screen lag with a much improved panel and additional pixels. Too many monitors are too glossy for my liking as the Samsung S27B970D looks impressive bar the glossy screen, same with cheaper Korean DGM that doesn't post BIOS. Set aside a few hours and read reviews on tftcentral.co.uk to help pick the perfect monitor.

How much of a limit is the vram at 1440p? Is it more the fact that a single card is not quick enough or does the fact you only have 3gb vram hold you back also?

I use 2Gb playing Bf4 with no AA. With AA on I think it can hit 2500 Gb. So its no limit at all unless you are running lots of monitors with AA.

i ran crysis 3 maxed out at 1400p with a single 290 unlocked to an x and was very pleased with how well it ran, didnt check fps as ive given up on that, if it looks and plays good then im happy

Not having a dig but if you say maxed out, that to me means all the settings on full and no way can a single 290X cope with that game at 1440P at playable frames.

thats fair enough gregster but it is what it is, i tried it and had no problems running it, perhaps someone else with a 290x and 1400p monitor can try, then verify as to wether or not im talking rubbish, in happy to accept im wrong

Maybe I am wrong mate. I will run it on my Titan and see what I get. It has been a while, so you never know :)

Last time I had a go with Crysis 3 maxed @1600p I got about 22fps with a single Titan. I can not see a 290X doing any better either but have not got round to trying any of mine.

Having said that Crysis 3 is playable on a single Titan @1600p maxed as the fps don't vary much and I can see the 290X doing the same.

I've ran 1440p @ 120hz for the last 18 months on a 670 and for the majority of games it was fine at the highest settings without an AA. Usually a FXAA is all you need to get rid of jaggies at 1440.

For the few that did struggle with keeping above 80fps (min I can handle without going nuts) i'd just drop quality down a bit or lower the res but without scaling.

1920x1440 (4:3) was a great res for some games as you still had 1:1 pixels and better performance.

You'll struggle in some games. That is the short answer.

Depends on your attitude toward certain settings. Tomb Raider Ultimate settings with FXXA. No problem.

Add 2X SSAA, you'll run below 60fps.

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
13170, 438269, 22, 44, 30.050

That is with a 3930K at 4.625Ghz and my Titan at 1163/3445. That was full ultra and i could feel that it was running terrible. Maybe the 290X has much better frame rates than the Titan in this?

Edit:

VRAM usage was 2841MB

Crysis 3 isn't crazy for VRAM but so long as you are using Very High with 4xMSAA it shouldn't go over 2.3GB at 2560x1600. Source.

Looking at the most demanding game currently, BF4 on Ultra seems unusually reasonable with VRAM at nearly 2GB even though friends have reached 2.4GB on 64 man servers. Source.

Being cautious this doesn't leave a lot of room if you are keeping a 780 Ti for at least a year or happen to use mods otherwise for sure it's a great card for 1440. You can easily back off on AA down to x2MSAA or use the cheap but blurry FXAA otherwise turn off/down ambient occlusion or textures. Its more about the resolution and will still look great.
