Would a 980 struggle with a DELL UltraSharp U3415W?

Hi All,

I have been looking at new monitors for a while but always batted between a new GFX or Monitor. The GFX would be a 1080Ti but to be honest my 980 is still going OK for now and I believe there will be some new GFXs coming later in the year, early next year anyway - prices may come down a little at this time.

The question is would my current 980 struggle with the new wider resolution? I already have a Samsung 27" 1440p and it is great but the extra width...would this crush the 980? I mainly play single player games and normally RPGs such as Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Skyrim etc. I also play a lot of Civ6. At the moment all these are played at full resolution and graphics. I do jump into a bit of DOOM and Wolfenstien too but not as much, although that said I can handle The New Order at full whack at 1440p fine at the moment.

So thoughts, would this kill performance enough for me notice or would the hit not be that bad?

Thanks

Scott

Just spoken to OcUK on the phone and they have suggested that a 1080Ti would be the better purchase than a new monitor, so going to do that in a week or so when cash is ready.

In case anyone reads this and wants to know, I did some research and there is a slight performance hit at this resolution to the 980 and was looking too much for future gaming en-devours.

You have a 980 now so upgrade the monitor and see how you feel, if you mostly game it might be wise to look at higher refresh monitors. If you want to do 3440x1440 with 60 fps with some settings knocked down to high then the 980 should still be fairly decent.

The issue I have is that if I upgrade my monitor and I do not like the performance, it will be 2018 until I can realistically get a new GFX. If I upgrade the GFX I already have the power for when I can afford a new monitor.

I do game a lot, but I also do other tasks on my PC too. Some design work, documents, music and getting into coding again now - hence the DELL rather than the X34 or something similar. Also I think the DELL is quite reserved in its looks, the X34 or similar are all 'look at me, I am a gamer, RAWR, look at my coloured accents and aerodynamic styling - if I was a car I would be the fastest for sure!'. I find them really ugly to look at, and that is the problem, you look at a monitor all the time. Put those specs in a DELL (or something else reserved) and that would have my money.

If that is the case then you might be better with saving more for a newer GPU and monitor, with the release of newer cards will come better monitors.

Pretty much dead set on getting the MSI 1080Ti. Love my MSI 980 and not had a single issue so staying with the brand, even if it is £80 more than the cheapest. Monitor I will look at again next year. Thanks for your advice.

No problem, the 1080ti will be a massive step up from a 980!

One option is to use a 3440x1440 UW panel with existing card, accept the lower fps, or use lower graphic settings, or even lower resolution until PC/GPU get quicker.

I did that for my 1900x1200, back then that was pretty high so games were a bit sluggish. But now it's pretty standard, so still have a decent monitor resolution. If you buy moitors and keep them for years this may be a good idea.

However, 34" 1440p screens have features that I would still like to see, and newer panels will have them- so on the flip side may not be a ideal purchase. In order of importance for me

Fast response, no lag, no ghosting, low GTG.
100+ to 144hz.
HDR

Well last night I order the 1080Ti because my monitor at the moment (although I am wanting an ultrawide) is serving me perfectly fine, it really is a great monitor. The 980 however is starting to show signs that I can't max every game anymore at 1440p. Dropping settings to high and sometimes medium solves this but upgrading the graphics card solves this too. A larger monitor at this point would have meant dropping settings further, decreasing my enjoyment of the games I play.

New monitor is still on the cards, but just not right now. :)
