Would a AMD OPTERON (185) 2.6GHz be a worthwhile upgrade from a x2 4200?

is opteron single core? not really familar with them. if so id imagine so.

Eh? If it is a single core chip, it'd be worth upgrading to from a dual core? I think not :) But anyway, the 185 is dual core 2.6GHz with 1MB cache per core and the X2 4200+ is 2.2GHz with 512KB cache per core.

If you're talking around the £50 mark then by all means go for it. If it's much more than that you'd just as well save up an extra £100 or so to get a new mobo and RAM as well.

OVERCLOCK THAT CPU NOW!!!! :D

That is the only difference between the two and that CPU should be able to do at least 2.6Ghz?.

as stated, keep what you have and overclock it....or if you're not happy with your max OC get the 185...in either case, overclocking is required :p

The Opty should hit 3GHz with ease, if you're prepared to overclock that cpu will see you through for a good year at that speed!

I had two Opterons one that ran 2.9 and the other 3.0GHz. :)

Obviously results with overclocking cannot be guaranteed but I would have thought 2.8GHz was on the lower side of clocking luck.

at least? my 4200x2 can only hit 2.6ghz MAX. :(

edit: to the op, i would say no not worth it unless it is very cheap, £30 odds.

I still have my opty now been little over a year and going strong. 2.8Ghz then day later 3ghz, i dont think i ever ran it stock . 8 hours oroth (cant remember name), posted screenies everywhere. Cooled by Ninja. Made the whole build with pennies, as i sold my barton 2500-M which did 2.5ghz with ease. I get 10500 3dmark 06 on vista! with 8800GTS 640 (original) OC'd 660/2000. I can play any game
