Would a better Graphics card run HD mkv files better?

Ok, managed to pick up a x2 4200+ for £70 (on special from this site) and problem solved. All my x264 files incl 1080p now play nice and smooth BUT the Step into Liquid clip is still not good - the vid plays perfectly but there are some sound stutters still.

Anyway thanks for all the info and advice - I am happy my 6800 can stay in service for a while yet.

As I've said, the only codecs I use are Core AVC , Haali Splitter , AC3 filter and ffdshow (for Xvid and Divx - H.264/AVC disabled). I have run both the utilities you suggest but I can't find any instructions on what to do with them!

Any advice on what to look out for?

Ok, That sample is wmvhd, I would guess FFDshow is using its codec for audio
pretty sure you need just the windows audio/video codec...about the only time I would let windows media player check on line for codecs !! latter WMP will have the codecs pre installed.

Remember what I said about codec pack install's just like most players and apps they all want to be default even if they are NBG at it ;)

Mplayer2 is great as You can quickly see what codecs are being used (file/ propities etc

OK done some more experimenting.

First of all the file plays fine in VLC.
In WMP11 the sound is fine but vid jerky.
In Tvedia vid is fine but sound is jerky.

According to graphedit it is using WMAudio Decoder DMO followed by AC3 filter.

Is there some way to get rid of all codecs and just start installing them again?

Again thats because you have a 6800 card with broken function for HD WMV in the PvP chip, and since WMP11 MS took out the extentions that helped in WMP10 with 2 hotfixes, simply as they want you to use WMP11 in Vista.

I have been there with a 6800Ultra AGP (at launch) and took action against Nvidia and got offered a newer card 7000 but it was PCI-E and at that time was no good to me.

You are best to stick to VLC or even try Media Player Classic it seems to use even less CPU.

Try to uninstal everything then clear folders and use the best regcleaner You can
Use sherlock to see whats left,
I only use wmp10/11 mplayer 2 and sometimes media player classic
codecs.. Pure video, xvid, ffdshow(careful what You tick) ac3 filter ,coreAVC and Halli splitter, also I use real and quicktime alt
You will proberly have to reinstall windows as you will never find all the rubbish Your players and codecs have left in the registry, You should have for the Processor switch anyway

JAKUS, what's wrong with using a codec pack like the K-lite one?

I use it and never had a problem with videos. Also have the same problem as the poster above, Step Into Liquid video is actually fine but sound is out of sync and choppy. Reckon that's the problem then?

IMO nothing if you know what each does and uncheck ones you dont need, if you install every aspect you end up with players etc and same mess as "MEGA" or "ACE" codec packs can cause.

If you only watch movies use the Standard pack, no need for more unless you encode your own.

Nothing wrong with using anything You want if it works for You !
I have spent hours and hours finding what does and does not work and in this thread I have basically explained that.

Make a list of everything You want to play on Your Pc then google "what's the best codec/filter for x,y,z "

Most people want a 1 click fix, hence the packs which as i have explained are dangerous

Yeah, I'm thinking re-install is the best option - would installing Vista solve all the 6800/wmp11 issues?

haven't read all the replies, so forgive me if it's already been sorted.

Try media player classic. Install coreavc, then in mpc go to options > external filters. Then add filter (choose coreavc) then check the 'prefer' button.

Read all the replys !!...You Bad Boy.. :D :D

As is normal these threads go 43 directions and we all forget who had the original problem :D

OK - Everything sorted finally!

Did a fresh install ..... yes was on XP before but decided to bite the bullet and go Vista Home Premium OEM.

Fun and games getting used to the OS but to cut a long story short everything now working beautifully in Media Center (not convinced things are quite as smooth in WMP11 though may be my imagination since I suspect they are the same thing). In Media Center everything I throw at it plays as smooth as you like. The only extra codecs I've installed are coreavc, ffdshow and ac3 filter.

The big problem I am having is the mechanics of playing the files.
The interface looks very nice but I am finding the actual playing of files a bit cumbersome compared with WMP.

For example it does not seem possible when playing video files to jump forward or back in larger chunks than the 60 seconds button - in other words where is the position slider? Did they take it off for MCE? Also I can't find a way to bookmark the place where you leave off with the video so it will open to there when you come back later, I am using a keyboard btw and not a remote control.

Is there a site maybe someone could direct me to where all the controls and how to use them are explained?

Thanks again to all for the help.

yes

the new AMD 2400 & 2600 cards decode x264 very well

Using an AGP or PCI version of the card u could use 3/4 year old components e.g. Athlon XP's to play blu ray or HD-DVD movies which would cripple the majority of people's CPU
