Would a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty be overkill for headphone use?

Currently gaming on onboard AC'97 Audio.

Am getting a set of Z5500's for gaming but for Music, combined with a good set of cans, will the Fatal1ty provide much difference when used with headphones only?

Thanks.

Gimp.

I often only use my headphones being that my speakers are very loud and I share a house with other people who I'm sure are happier with me using headphones for the most part.

The reason at the time I bought the Fata1ty is because of the convenience a front panel offers for plugging in headphones. There's another X-Fi that does this via a box that sits on the desk but was (is?) more expensive.

You'll notice an increased in the quality of all sound over on-board. What cans are you using?

That Elite PRO looks AMAZING.

Do you know the difference between that card and the Fatal1ty PRO?

I quiet like the idea of the standalone panel rather than the expansion bay.

I dont have any deecent cans as yet but am looking at either:

Audio Technica ATH-A900
Denon AH-D2000

I have the aforementioned cans, and have just ordered the latter ones so will be able to make a direct comparison in the next few days. The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's are really good cans as well if you like closed cans (?).

I'm not sure on what other differences there are between the cards apart from the external boxes. One sits on a desk, the other goes into a 5 1/4", whether that warrants a difference of a £100 wouldn't surprise me.

Have gone and ordered a Creative Elite PRO and Logitech Z5500

So the "Is it overkill" question isnt really relevant now I think as need something deecent to run the speakers off.

Still looking for a set of cans though for night time use for both gaming and music. The CMSS-3D feature on the creatives will also be handy :)
