Would a GTX 950 do for me?

Hey all, just after any opinions as I haven't upgraded since getting my 560ti about 5 years ago!

I bought No Man's Sky yesterday and my frame rate is appalling at 720p and the fan is HOWLING!

I'm looking for a card that will work for my spec (3rd Gen I5-3570K, 8gb) without being overkill, can't really afford 190 for a 970 atm.

Running 2 x 1080p screens, only using 1 for games, the other just for Spotify and some browsing etc...

Would a 950 be worthwhile or are they the kind of cards that exist but really shouldn't?

How much is your budget?

RX460 is brand new card and similar to +~10% in DX11 over the GTX950, and much faster on DX12 and Vulcan, and goes for around £100-120. (4GB versions).

However for that money you can grab used, at least an R9 380 if not an R9 290/290X.
Which are far superior cards. (50% in the case of 380, to more than double the speed on the 290s).

And as above, if your budget is around £200, GTX970 or better the RX480 are far superior cards. (there is also the RX470 in the middle)

An AMD rx 470 is probably going to suit your budget best, and give the most performance.

Very recently a 3GB GTX 1060 was shown, which might become a 1050. You could wait a bit and see what Nvidia do for that.

Also, and very important to consider, No Man's Sky appears to be a terribly optimized PC game. In-game performance will not accurately show the power of your hardware. I have read that people with Nvidia GTX 1080's (a GPU worth around £700) struggle to get even 60 frames per second in-game. That's utterly atrocious performance.
