Would a intel 3.0 be faster at multitasking then my fx55 2.78

Thats true!

I got a P4 3.6 only a few weeks ago, and its bloody awful. Feels sluggish even when simply navigating my folders on a fresh install, its way slower than any of my AMDs.

While benchtests bring it up on top, the real world truth is that its the pits.

I would have thought a p4 3.6 would have totally thrashed amd for multitasing

I recon so, but Its a very reliable outcome, no matter what OS I install onto it.

Best OS has been XP64 for it, for speed... Worst is MediaCenter, and whats more annoying, is that MCE is what it came with, so I am still undecided as to whether stick with MCE ( At this time, its massively cut down to try to speed it up, cos MCE is a right bag of snails ) or buy another licence for XP64, although I have been working on cutting the MCE side of the installation CD so I am just left with Pro, and using the MCE Serial.

Anyway, on paper, and in benches, the P4 certainly does shine, dont get me wrong, but when you put it against the AMDs, its not. Its real poor.

As for Multitasking, this is somethign thats always made me laugh...

My 2 main AMD PCs are a Winchester 3200 @ 2.5Ghz and an X4 4400 @ stock. MY next 2 are a Barton 2500 @ 2.6 and an XP1700 @ 2.7... All running 1GB and all running at least 2 HDs. The P4 has currently got 3 HDs and has 2GB... All the AMD can get loaded up with as many apps as I can be bothered to start up, and I can switch between them and bring up the next windows absolutely instantly... No pauses at all.

The P4 however is a pile. Just gettign the desktop up on startup and you can see its lagging behind... Ok, so this is no surprise, any PC can startup at a certain speed and it means nothing to its true speed, but once oyu open up a few apps, it starts to lag, sometimes going from one app to another might even take 2 seconds, maybe more! - that to me is simply not good enough!

Its like a Celeron running XP with only 128MB ram... Its bloody awful.

And this HyperThreading malarky does nothing either... On or off, its still fowl.

I am going to install Linux onto it in the next few days and have another play before I sell it off to buy a real PC like an AMD Duron 1300.

Seems a bit sketchey to me. I think there is either something wrong with your processor or with your build...

Could be both?

The PC I got as-is. I would not have chosen an intel if it was one of my own.

When I had it, it was a poor performer and I put this down to the massive ammount of utter junk that comes supplied, so I killed it all off, but it was still poor, I then put it down to WinMCE so I killed it all off, and put XP Pro, XP Home, and XP64 onto it, and they are all massively quicker than MCE but still somethign is amiss.

Now, I have used 4x512MB Samsung PC3200 so its at 2GB, and at this moment, I am using a Maxtor 40GB IDE Drive on a Serillel adapter, as C: ( 7GB ) and T:( 30 odd ) and 2x200GB WD SATA Drives as D: with Software Raid, plus, I have also upgraded the GFX from an X700LE to an X800GTO, and at first I was not impressed with that either, but after some tweaking, I have managed to get it to give me Frame rates close to my Barton 3200 & 6800GT, so I am happier now.

SuperPI was a funny one too! - at first I was only managing 43 and all of a sudden, one night, I went to have another look at improving it, and I got 35?

Cant figure that one out?

No, its not the BIOS knocking the CPU down, cos thats now locked at 3.6Ghz

This PC, while certainly massively improved on Benchmarks, is definitely nowhere near as quick as my AMD setups in *** real world, but on paper, and in benchmarks, its scoring times that are beating the AMDs, and that HyperThreading is a load of cack too... Very overhyped and a bit of a waste of time if you ask me... Not yet seen anything thats made it worth othering with other than the Apps never take more than 50% of the CPU time in the TaskManager!

I have hated Intels for a long time, and while I started to like this one as I tweaked it more and more, I have now lost all hope in expecting it to beat my AMDs, and even Encoding its slower, so Its very quickly moving towards the For sale sign... Very quickly.
