Would an entry level core 2 duo with 8800GT be ok for games!

Would it? Would an E2140 work well with games if the rest of the spec was quite high?

The reason i ask is that i am thinking of building and overclocking a new rig. I'm thinking that if i get it wrong, its better to do so with a cheap, than an expensive processor, and then once i get the hang of things i can upgrade to something better next year when the new Intels are out.

Should be fine the difference in cache from benchies that Melbourne720 has done shows there is little difference in performance.

Might be worth looking at the 2160 or 2180 if you want easy clocks.

Cheers, i'd like to make life as easy as possible as it'd be my first build.

As above, clock an e21x0 processor with a 8800 GT and you'll be fast enough for most games, yet still on good terms with the bank manager (well, less worse anyway!). Comparison in sig.

My E2140 clocks ina t 3.2ghz, couldnt be happier. Not sure its really worth the extra few quid for the other versions, but i guess it may make life easier.

Ye get a 21x0 version, I'd say a E2180 because of the better and easier chance of high overclock and it's only a little bit more expensive...

Running my E2180 at 3.4 with an 8800GT and have no problems with games, even the Crysis demo, which I am running with everything on high, albeit at 1280*1024.

Yeah I'm running my e2180 at 3.5 and an ac freezer 7 pro, temps get up to about 64 on full out load. Crysis runs great as well at 1280*1024, all setting high. those 8800gt's are such good value for money right now :)

my e2160 overclocks further and runs cooler than my old e6600 :p

well the heatsink doesnt even get warm, maybe ive not applied the thermal paste/compound properly? and im sure i could push the core higher, just is there any need? :p

edit : well it can do 3.6 but thats with 1.43volts it isnt stable at all and the temps hit 70*c, i dont wanna temp putting anymore volts thro it,
