Would an FX CPU be a worthy upgrade?

In a hole in the ground..
Hi there, first post so go easy on me.

Simple question really. Taking into consideration the system i currently have(specs in my sig) would it be worthwhile upgrading from my Phenom 965BE to a newer Piledriver CPU with the motherboard that i have?

I have only just started to play games on my pc since the kids took over the PS3  so i want to get as much out of what i have as i can without spending mega bucks on a new build.

Your thoughts and suggestions would be most appreciated.:)

Gaming may not be a huge difference unless your game can use all cores, BF3 etc., but it is a worthy upgrade on that motherboard IMHO. If you do, make sure you update the bios before you swap processors.

Thanks for the reply nkata. I updated to the latest bios as soon as i got the motherboard so i'm all good there.

The dilemma i now have would be which FX cpu to go for. Is there much difference between them performance wise and in their overclocking capabilities.

One of the main reasons i raised my question today was because i saw OcUK had offers on a few of their FX cpu's so seemed to good time to broach the subject.

I have checked the motherboard support and i says that all FX cpu's are supported.

Well unless anyone can convince me that a 4 or 6 core cpu would be a better option my finger is poised to order a FX8350 this time tomorrow.

From what I have read its probably not a massive jump from your current processor as your running at 4ghz, for gaming anyway.
If you dont have an SSD then I'd recommend you spend the money of one of them personally, it made a huge difference for me.
Although I'm far from an expert just the opinions I picked up when I was looking for my FX6300.

I do already have an SSD. I will admit its not the fastest SSD in the world but when OcUK where selling them so ridiculously cheap it would have been rude not to of bought one.

Maybe i will look to a larger faster SSD once i get my cpu.

Oh yeah I see now, was it there before?
I'm impressed with my FX6300 running 4ghz, I did want a FX8350 but my mobo wont run it so made my decision easier

Imo the ONLY upgrade from a 965is a 8350. Been toying with it myself, but holding on to see if another chip comes out to mske a bigger boost

If you play games like BF3 or Crysis 3, you would really see the performance boost of an fx8350, however you would likely see an impressive frame rate jump if you were to get another 7850.

I would say that if you find your PC adequate at the moment dont upgrade. If you play at 1080p at 60Hz, you might want to look at a CPU upgrade. If you play 3D or at high resolution, go for another 7850. I believe that another GPU would give you a better increase in performance no matter what games you play and a CPU upgrade is more game specific, though a 7850 is definitely enough GPU power for the vast majority of gamers.

if you going to be playing BF3 Crysis 3 or games like that then yes you will see a big boost in performance but if they are older games then there is no point you GPU is fine you will be able to run probs max settings on crysis 3

I did consider about getting another HD7850 but my motherboard only supports crossfire at 8 x 8 not 16 x 16 so i am guessing that would reduce significantly any benefits of running duel GPU's.

Like i said i have only just started suing the PC for gaming so as to what games i will play i don't know yet as i like various genre's of games. But i did buy Tomb Raider on its release just so i could reacquaint myself with the lovely Lara.

So to cover all bases i think i will buy the FX8350 for now and if anyone can enlighten me regarding whether crossfire has benefits albeit at 8 x 8 then please do.

Thank you all for responses so far :)

Well i've taken the plunge and ordered an 8350. Looking forward to have a play when it arrives.

Thanks for the heads up on the line count on my sig pandem0nium.

Hi

Just got my 8320 today, had a phenom 955 and.......wow this 8320 is a massive improvement. I currently have it at 4.2

I too have a M5A99X EVO R2 board, you will be very impressed!

There is a decent jump on newer games such as BF3 and Crysis 3. This is only going to become more the norm once the new consoles are out and everyone is writing engines for 8 CPU threads....

Crossfire will be fine. (From a bandwidth point of view.)

Not everyone.
Ubisoft's Anvil Next (AC3/AC4) is 4 threaded, and isn't doing any favours to AMD's CPU's, which is a shame, stock 2500k doesn't exactly give the greatest experience in the world either, even at 4.8GHZ I can get stupid dips.

Is there any physical difference between an FX 8320 and 8350 chip? Does one overclock better than the other or is it a 2600k-2700k kind of situation?
