would any of the AMD multicore systems be suitable for

An 8 core FX wouldn't be a bad choice, however, with ZEN (probably? Who knows with AMD...) around the corner, you might want to wait. 40% more instructions per clock cycle=big performance improvement.

Have you considered and i7? Or do you prefer the cost savings offered by an 8350 or similar CPU?

Keep in mind there are 4 core 8 thread Xeons that will fit a standard board and they are quite cheap. That might be a better option for you.

Also, while the 8 core AMD cpus are cheap, the motherboards they need to run properly without overloading the power delivery section of the board causing premature board death cost about $130 and up. You could mate a Xeon with a $60 board. Just something to keep in mind.

Also, the AMD AM3+ platform is limited to DDR3 and PCIE 2.0. It also lacks many modern connectivity ammenities in most implementations.

It's for a mate of mine who is about to start college and I think he has about £1200. He doesn't know anybody who could just buy the components and assemble and unfortunately I don't have the time to put something together myself. A capable system of any kind for that price and under would do- but he wants to game as well as render using Max. Thanks

Overclockers can build the pc (For a fee) if he can't do it himself.

Does he just need the tower ?

He needs everything. I think I'll just look at a few prebuilt systems and send him a link. If anybody could recommend anything in particular, that would be great. Thanks.

Everything (I can think of):

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,146.79
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Single memory stick leaves room for another to make it 32GB later if necessary.

Good quality headset for gaming/voice. Basic keyboard and mouse - I can't squeeze in anything better there.

IPS monitor instead of TN/VA, for the editing.

No overclocking.

Add wireless adapter if needed.

Build fee'd take it to around the £1200+/- area. Can inquire in Customer Service forum for exact quote and/or advice on this build.
