would getting 2gb of RAM make a difference in Need For Speed - Most Wanted

Depends. When ** playing alt and tab out then bring up task manager and check out how much ram is actually being used. IF its no where near maxed out ** ram then no it wont help. Sometimes games do have bugs that do juttery performance even on most powerful of computers.

currently have 1gb ram pc3200, running at 220mhz (gt7800, opteron [email protected]), i notice some stutters in the game, even at medium detail
is a 2gb kit likely to make any difference ?

Unfortunately it does do that occasionally  , turn everything upto full your pc should be more than good enough to cope.

No, I think the game will still suck :p

Each to their own i guess, if everyone like the same stuff it would be a really boring place, ;)

No. My memory usage never exceeds around 700meg when playing the game, so even if people raised the detail levels slightly I doubt it would get close to 1gig.

Doesn't look like your mem, I've got same cpu, same amount of memory, lower spec GPU, BUT my cpu and mem are running slighty higher then yours:

Need for Speed - Most Wanted at 1280x1024 Full Detail.
GT6600-128Mb
Opteron 146@2800
1gb (2x512Mb) Ram running at 280Mhz

It all runs silky smooth, not a glitch.

Like the others said, if you still have about 300mb free mem available in resource manager - 2gb ain't gonna help ya :), it's something else.

What do you class a smooth, and how much full detail including aa/af do you run?

This game runs far from smooth, the stutters that the op mentions, I also get them, I actually think it is when you go from one part of the city/district to another, the game has to catch up and do not do it very well.

I also have motion blur turned off via reg, detail on high, 4x8 or 16 just testing my 7800 gt, my gto2 encountered the same glitches.

Turn off shadows, I found that's a big performance killer. In fact you can see the effect of some of the settings even in the menu, because it's rendering a car in the background. Run FRAPS, change a setting in the advanced menu, then skip back out to the main options menu where your car is displayed. I have most settings on max, except shadows on minimum, car reflection detail on Low, and road reflection detail is one notch below max. This gives me decent performance on a 2.56ghz venice with 1gig DDR466 and an overclocked 6800gt, running 1280x960 with low FSAA and medium AF.

Yes shadows does effect the game, I have messed with the settings since I got it, I am not saying it is like the cpu airship test in 05, it just seems the game is poorly encoded.

On a long term note 2gb is a def. Most games take use of this as 1gb is just not enough for all of their needs. Wont be suprised if it goes to 4gb within the next year.

I'd be amazed if 4gig became necessary this year. That's more than double the current footprint of the most demanding games (around 1.6gig from what I've heard). Maybe 2.5gig or 3gig at the absolute max.

At the end of the day, developers will not want to have a minimum spec of greater than 1gig RAM (due to the fact that very few outside the enthusiast sector have that). Of course with games on max settings there will be a need for more memory, but I can't see it being THAT much greater.

interesting. I have played nfsmw on my work rig and it plays with absolutely no glitches or lagging.

P4 3.2
Ati X850XT
Abit A17
1Gb Corsaid Value Select PC3200 (2x512)
SATA I 250Gb Hard drive

Ive just built my home system and I was a bit surprised to see quite a bit of stuttering! Not sure if its lack of ram in this case... Will do a bit of tweaking and report any findings!

Athlon 64 3500+
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
512 Corsair Value Select
6800GS Extreme Edition 256Mb
SATA II 160Gb

I am also looking to get 2Gb ram for the home rig and wondered if anyone can suggest anything.. dual channel preferred methinks.. I have about £160.00 to spend..

NFS:MW needs 768meg RAM to run smoothly really, that's what's letting you down.

I'd get something like the g-skill ZX (PC3200 CAS2) unless you are overclocking significantly (HTT 250+), in which case the HZ (PC4000 cas2) might be worthwhile. Both should come in just under your £160 budget.

Checked and in the Nvidia Driver i've got:
aa set to 8xS (also tried app controlled)
af set to 16x (also tried app controlled)
Image Quality - High Quality

In game resolution at 1280x1024
Advanced Video Settings and everything is either set to on, high or the slider at max.

Just tested again and it's silky smooth, no glitches.

I can run the game on full details BAR SHADOWS on 1gb pc3200, 6800nu, barton 2500@3200 - i think its just the game issue mate - turn shadows lower its silky smooth mine doesnt stutter at all.
Ohh ye - its not worth buying 2gb of ram for a game like nfs:mw anyways :D
