would gigabit switch help network speeds

"Get a HP procurve" seems to be batted about the forums quite a bit without specifying which model at all. You can spend anything from a tenner on ebay for an ancient thing to corporate levels of spending. Its all well and good speccing OTT switches for home use but they aren't necessarily the best thing with their higher power usage and noise (if you buy ones with fans of course).

To be honest I dont know why people are suggesting anything costly for home use, there is really no point :\

If your in to networking and want a decent set-up/lab at home, or for business use then fair enough, but for general use at home is there really any point in getting something jazzy?

No. Which is pretty much what was said in post 4 with the caveat in post 8. Its ocuk though, so pretty much any spec me thread always end up with people saying that the op should 'up their budget' and consider something outrageously over specced. Witness the motors forum and all the spec me build threads where 90% of the time they come in at 10-20% more over the ops original budget.

1410-8G. No noise as there isn't a fan.

Someone who has a server would probably come under the enthusiast category, so specing a £50 switch is probably more suitable than some unbranded £20 one.

Yep those speeds seem right. 10mb is the most you'll get from the old switch so *any* gigabit switch would have helped, but a decent one will improve it further.
