hi all
was planning a move to SB, but then the idea of a whole new system poped into my head.

my current system is:

Athlon X4 @ 3.55
Asus M5A97 PRO 970G
Xfx 6870
8 GB corsair xms3 1333mhz
WD caviar blue 500Gb and 250GB
arctic power 750w PSU
Casecom k3-988 with a window mod

the system i put togther is:

i5 2500k
MSI Z68A-G45-G3 motherboard
Ati 6950
Coolermaster haf X
16GB corsair vengance
Xfx PRO 750w
Crucial m4 64GB
Segate barrucada 1TB
Akasa Venom

this system adds up to just under £1000

but can people shed light on if this would be a wise move ? or am i just wanting the whole new system thing?

and also how much would i currently get for my current system if anybody knows?

Thats a significant upgrade IMO, Especially going Sandy. You should see a big jump in overall performance.

Are you considering the 6950 2GB? I would over the 1GB.

Ask in MM for a price on your current system.

i dont have access due to amount of posts.......

the money i get from my system would pay for the newer one as i am on a student budget so :/

i really dont know if its a worth while decsion though.... i would a massive boost in performance i know.

i was going for a 2GB one.

I look at your rig and think,

Better more trust worthy PSU.

Phenom 955BE etc and a faster GPU.

Maybe a nice case and SSD

i want to move away from AMD due to the BD being a flop.

it just seemed like if i created a new system:
- i would get all the upgrades i want at one time and be very future proof
- the benefit of a new system
- an excuse to build :P

You are stuck between having a PC thats not rubbish enough to warrant a big upgrade and wasting money for a improvement.

Wait for the next big thing from intel and ATI/Nvidia and in the mean time get a CASE/PSU/SSD

i just spend months waiting for the next best thing from AMD ! haha

is my psu really that bad.

i know i need a SSD and case.

just made sense to me to get all my upgrades at once ! haha

It is, the golden rule around here is never skimp on the PSU, quality is everything.

unfortunately a cheap £50, 700w PSU wont put its rated power out when needed causing either PC restarts/BSOD or worse damage to connected components and a failure of the PSU unit.

A solid 750w/850w PSU from say ANTEC/XFX/Corsair will put out the power and more, they will also have fast acting safety features to safely shut down and recover in the event of a spike.

These two are pretty much fit and forget, you never have to worry about "do I have enough power" "is my PSU ok" "can I add a second GPU"

think i may just go with your advice.
a new case ( a haf X :P)
a new psu
a SSD

and then maybe pick up a second phenom II X4 ? till i hear about the new stuff from Intel and Amd both cpu and gpu

does that sound like its a good idea?

That makes more sense currently, the case+PSU can be the base for many future builds and last years as the case will have the size and room for even the maddest of graphic cards and CPU heatsinks, the PSU will be safer/more power efficient and has the grunt for the future (the only thing a 850W etc PSU cant do is SLI GTX590's/Crossfire 6990's, but thats insane as even one is is ridiculous)
