Hello,
I am looking to get a littler server for my mums new place along with 2 new samsung TV's that support the Plex app. She may have a soundbar but otherwise TV speakers.
I've looked for a definitive answer with no luck but as far as I can make out Plex server when transcoding is intensive, so was looking getting my mum an Intel NUC with a 256GB SSD for storage, Core i3 as she only watches or needs a few films/TV shows at a time that would be fine. This was going to be plugged into the router via homeplugs and the TV's also via homeplugs so should be no bandwidth issues that wireless brings. However, I don't know if she actually needs a system that powerful (expensive) because I can't seem to tell if it requires any kind of transcoding to play a full bitrate bluray MKV with DTS-HD/DolbyHD, just for ease i'd rather not have to convert all my files to give to her! Will it play the full bitrate video through the TV fine just streaming directly WITHOUT transcoding and just downgrade the DTS-HD to normal DTS/Stereo without issue?
As in, is transcoding, and the power it requires needed? Or could I get away with a cheap £200 mini PC with a bigger mechanical hard drive and notice no difference if direct streaming?
Cheers for any help!
