Would I notice any difference....

Well I am also considering i5 now that I read its fairly decent! But that would require new motherboard and memory!

unfortunatly yeah, whole new system, so its down to whether you need it or not. dont get sucked into the i7 route, unless you feel you will make good use of it as for the money difference you could get a considerably better gfx setup.

Your current system is fine tbh.

If you do plan on upgrading, might as well go for the i7. Atleast you'll be able to upgrade to a hex core when the time comes without changing the mobo.

LGA 1156 (core i5) is limited to quad cores afaik.

for now but doesnt mean intel wont do something in the future.
for gaming though, do you need more than quad core for the foreseeable future?

SSD? That's a bit left field aint it?

It would help the loading times of games and the feel/responsiveness of windows.

But I feel he really wants more graphics POWERRRRRR!!!!!!

SSD's are too pricey at the moment! I think we are a couple years off them being mainstream!

I was in almost exactly the same position as you a few months back, bought an SSD after much uming and ahing and I can honestly say it's the best upgrade I've ever made. Even bought a second for my other PC - people always put them down, but I guarantee the people putting them down dont own one :)

I'm not dissin SSD, it will be my next item when prices return to normal.

Its the sort of thing you buy as the cheery on top of the cake!

The O.P has a good pc slightly let down by a 512mb 4870, this needs changing in my honest oppinion.

4870 512mb is a decent card, not much should stretch it, you only really need 1GB if your gaming at high resolutions (1920x1200) if that's what your using then it may be worth getting a new card but even a 5850's going to set you back over 200 notes...
