Would I save much running a derv?

Forget the cost of the car etc, it would only be a 306 HDi anyway. I was wondering if i'd save much a month running a diesel out of sheer curiosity.

I'm doing about 400 miles every 1 week and 2/3 days.

To fill up the Saxo cost's about £37-£38 @ 88.9p and I get about 42-44mpg

A 306 HDi would do 50mpg? Would I make a *significant* saving?

Put simply... no :p

What you gain in an extra 8MPG you lose from paying 11p/l extra for your fuel so its swings and roundabouts.

I think the real question in scenarios like this is- are you happy with your current car.

Surely it's not that complex to work out?

Over 400 miles at 42mpg you will use 9.5 gallons of petrol, which is 43litres. This costs you £38.20~

Over 400 miles at 50mpg you will use 8 gallons of diesel, which is 36 litres. This costs you £35.60~

You will save £2.60 each week. Over a month, it'll be less than a tenner.

No i'm not happy with my current car and i'm looking at Clio 172's and Civic Type R's but as i'm putting in over £100 a month in the Saxo @ 42-44mpg it pretty much wipes out the Type R tbh.

Interesting choice of cars to be looking at. An old diesel Pug vs a newish performance clio...

The intercooler suggests you'll be driving it hard, in which case that 50mpg probably won't be achieved anyway.

You cannot simply 'forget the cost of the car, etc' as on fuel costs alone of course a diesel will be cheaper. Its the other costs that tip the balance.

A 306 HDi would cost about £1500-£2k to buy so it has depreciated a fare whack to not notice the difference in purchase price between petrol and diesel.

As pointed out by HxC and his maths, it's not even worth considering so MODS close the thread.

42-44 from your saxo is pretty good, and 100 a month into fuel is nothing for that mileage. is it a VTS?

Only me again, yes it is. Dropped down to 38-39mpg as of late but it's still pretty good.

I'm still stuck on which car to get.

I've upped the budget to make it a tad easier but it's just made it a lot harder lol.

I've made a shortlist (long list) :-

Skoda Fabia vRS - great mpg, cheap insurance, roomy but handles like a barge.
Clio 182 - decent mpg, very fun to throw around, high insurance that can't be paid monthly. Wouldn't mind something a bit bigger though.
Clio 172 - decent mpg, seem to be getting on a bit now though, insurance same as above.
Seat Leon Cupra FR TDi 150 - good looking, drives well, lots of room, great mpg and cheap insurance.
Golf Mk4 GT TDi 150 - a bit bigger than the clio, good MPG and cheap insurance.
Seat Ibiza 1.8T Cupra R MK2 - cheap to buy, 35mpg combined, well put together, good handling, can be remapped to over 200bhp but high insurance like the Clio's.
BMW Compact 325ti/320td - well, it's a beemer!

Any other's I should be considering? Need to be getting 35mpg or over really.

I'm running a Sexo VTR & no matter how much I thrash it the needle hardly moves, Any gain in MPG would be wasted as Derv stinks & makes your car slow & noisy. Personally I'd much rather rash my little sexo about than some old oil burner no matter how much I saved.
My Camper is Derv though but that is a different matter entirely as I need the low torque for the weight.

You driven a VAG derv?

I feel my Saxo is slow and noisy.........and it's a petrol.

I've driven most motors, Not all of course but most. Power delivery is completly different so although it's true you do get relatively quick dervs they stll feel slow & sound like trucks. When a Derv Beema, Jag or Audi/Golf passes me I cringe. Personally I like perky motors that are light & sound awesome.
