Would I save much running a derv?

I'd love an LCR, always thought they were well out of budget.

Are high mileage ones ok? More to the point will the turbo last?

The turbo will last quite well assuming you let the car warm up and cool down properly. My first turbo did over 80,000 miles, and was only replaced as part of the engine swap, not because the turbo went!

Again, nothing wrong with high milage so long as the necessary work has been done.

What sort of gain do you think thats going to give you lol?

This post is non negotiable and only valid if you actually get some cash and purchase a bloody car.

0-60 in 7.2 and 33mpg combined, they can be had for 5k. Can you PLEASE stop posting spec me threads now?

What's your problem? I've got cash and i'm looking for cars?

Most for £5000 seem to have around 100,000 on the dial. I'll try and find a local one and give it a test drive.

How is the handling on these?

They are understeery on the limit, but much stiffer than the MK4 golf on which its platform is based. Quite chuckable for its size, but behaves itself far better with the traction control OFF, TC ON is just too intrusive IMO.

Uprated front ARB, and the addition of a rear ARB helps wonders, as does stiffening up the front subframe and engine mounts. All relatively cheap upgrades.

Then sodding well buy something :p You can't expect performance and "economy" at this price range. A Diesel 306 isn't going to be faster than a VTS.

This is an old thread.

At the start I was wondering if I would save money buy running a diesel.

I did not have the budget I have now so the 306 was the option I was considering.

A FMIC on a 306 HDi takes them to 150bhp - by no means slow.

It turns out my mileage does not really warrant one.

Hence looking for a petrol that is not too thirsty but has similar performance to a Saxo VTS.
