...in terms of gaming performance (or would it just be lighter pockets ;)) in upgrading my current rig ? - welcome comments and/or advice please.

Current system is Antec 1200 gaming case, E8600 o'c to 4ghz, 4gb ram (running at 1600), Striker II NSE mb, 2 x gtx280's in sli, Asus xonar dx sound card, Intel 150 gb SSD with Win7 64 bit installed.

Am considering upgrading mb, processor and ram for an i7 package sold here - but would I see any benefit - and if so, how much ? (and what would I have to upgrade to (i.e. 930 - or above?) to realise any benefit)

Not willing to go above £1500 for any upgrade costs at the moment :)

More's the question why do you think you need to upgrade? What games are under performing that warrants such an expensive upgrade.

The only change I'd make is swap out the E8600 for a high end quad (q9***). You might not hit the dizzy heights of 4GHz but the 2 extra cores may make up for this plus more. Then see whats around the corner for next year.

thanks for the quick reply - primarily I'm feeling that BF:BC2 is suffering (in FPS terms) due to my cpu.

I currently get between 55 and 75 FPS on most servers playing this and hear that I7's are better 'suited' to this game ?

55 fps is good. As long as the min fps is above 24fps you won't have too many problems.

An i7 would suit more video encoding applications than games tbh because of the their raw throughput. An i5 would be just as good when oc. However, reading the Bf2bc specs, i think just poping an LGA775 Quad would do you and your walllet well. Just as long as it OC'd

Recommended PC Specifications for BFBC2 & BF1943
Processor: Quadcore
Main memory: 2GB
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 260
Graphics memory: 512MB
OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
Free HDD space: 15GB for Digital Version, 10GB for Disc Version (BFBC2)
10GB for Digital Version, 4GB for Disc Version (BF1943)

I'm sure when you bought the platform you wanted some future proofing, so now's the time to use it.

people forget that the eye dosent see above 24 fps and so if your system can play any game higher then 25fps at all times during a game then there is no point in upgrading.

Your specs are very good even more than mine and I can run crysis perfectly fine on full HD. I don't see any point of you upgrading as your cpu is fast enough as it is. However as other mentioned just get a quad cpu like a Q6600 G0 stepping and overclock it. Other than that you don't need an upgrade.;)

thanks for all the replies and advice - so......... a q9650 @£260 would be a good move then ? :)

And @ DotA - my primary issue with FPS is with mouse lag/responsiveness etc - my old eyes prolly cant see above 12fps :) !

...... and I could always spend some of the cash on watercooling my rig as an 'exercise' over the Autumn... !

I am thinking of doing the same swapping my e8500 for a q9xxx - know any good places to sell the old girl? its an e0. I just hate eBay with a passion
and only for BC2 - all other games run super fast @ 3.8ghz w ati4870
