as above, just ordered aload of parts to build a new pc, but the dvd rw drive is an ide drive, will this be ok to use or will it slow things down?

A SATA optical drive is not quicker than an IDE.

The IDE data transfer rate is quicker than the optical read/write speed.

Good info, never would have thought it though. Guess I can keep my old IDE for some time. Must resist from getting a newer blu ray drive.

When I asked about taking my IDE optical forward to my new build after xmas, someone told me that I shouldnt becuase, and I quote
"A system is only as quick as it's slowest component"

It didnt sound right to me for an optical.
At leasst I know now... cheers!
