i have a table in the dinning room but if i even tried to build near it i would get a kick on the arse, so i will have to build on the wooden floor in my room.

would it be okay to do so?

would i need an anti static mat?

just put some cardboard down so you dont get **** all over it will be fine!
you shouldnt build on stuff like carpet

if ur cat jumps on it and gets her paw caught in the gfx card cooler tho...

In over tens years of building machines, I've built on all manner of surfaces, I've worn all manner of clothing, I've never "grounded" myself, I grab CPUs by the pins, graphics cards and RAM by the PCIe bit that goes into the motherboard slot.... I've yet to kill a component. Though I've nearly killed myself when I've forgotten to turn a machine off and reached in to pull components out.

to be honest i wouldnt even try, i would never hear the end of moaning. working on the floor doesnt bother me anyway due to laying wooden floors them selfs.

Yup I've done a build on the floor and it went ok, I just couldn't face doing any cable management as my knees were killing me :D

I built mine on a wooden floor originally, but when the parts go screeching across the floor where you've knocked them, it's like an expensive fingernail-chalk-board grind. I'd recommend a table.

I didn't de-static myself or wear special clothes. I think those static wristbands are a con to be honest... Unless people like balloons and woolly Christmas jumpers a lot more than I realise...

Kitchen worktop maybe? Wooden floor is fine if you have young knees ;)

I don't use the wrist straps either. Ground yourself by touching the case before anything else. Whilst you are building you'll notice you are constantly touching the case grounding yourself as you go.

The antistatic bags are only antistatic on the inside, outside of the bag is a conductor so not the best idea to put stuff ontop of the bag (watch as people say they have never had any problems but again leave stuff in the bag till you need it out).

The underneath of mouse mats is an anti static surface FYI if you are paranoid about a surface to put the mobo on.

Any more questions or if you need assistance with the build on the day you know where to find us :)

i was going to leave everything in the bags anyway, its hard tho im usually like a kid at christmas.

i was going to just et the mobo on the box as seen on newegg etc.

thank for the tips and don't worry i will have everyone torchered on saturday.

Static is over-rated. Yeah it can happen.. Ive messed around with PCs and computers and circuit boards for 20+ years and never killed anything by static.

Static is made up by Map electronics store so they can charge 10x what a product is worth to clueless hypochondriacs. Went in there for a fan the other day, £15 for a cheap LED one I shook my head and left. £10 for a kettle lead LOL

Sadly I have also ventured into one of these places.

They had a big line in disco light systems which you would have seen on top of the pops in the mid nineties.

I actually went in looking for a headset as mine had broke, I didn't expect them to have anything fantastic. Just wanted something to fill the gap until when I got a decent replacement, but the one headset they had looked like ****.
