Would it be worth upgrading my ADSL modem?

"ATM VC Congested" + other adsl modem questions

Big edit since I've solved some problems. The original post is still below.

Is the "ATM VC Congested" warning my modem or ISP? When I google for an answer opinions seem to be split about 50/50. Considering how my exchange only serves about 250 people I don't see how less than 500 connections from uTorrent can mess it up. But, also considering how the BT Voyager 205 modem is in bridged mode and the NAT being bypassed I don't see why the modem would care how many connections I make.

Would a better modem help to negotiate a better speed on max adsl?

What simple ethernet adsl modems available in the UK do you guys know about? I don't want a NAT or USB port or anything. So far I've seen the D-Link DSL-300T, D-Link DSL-320T (300T with ADSL2/2+ as far as I can tell), Linksys ADSL2MUE and the X-Modem. Does anyone have any opinions on these?

-----------------------
I'd been on ntl for 5 years, the last year of which was on 10mbit/768k, 70gb down soft cap/unlimited up but I've moved back into my parents' house and am now using BT ADSL 1.1mbit/288k with a 6GB cap (I assume both ways). I'm thinking of upgrading to BT Total Broadband with the 50gb cap (does anyone know if it's only downstream?) and I was wondering if my equipment will provide the best results. EDIT: What's the upstream on BT Total Broadband? I miss the 768k up more than 10mbit down, I only need about 5 of that.

My current setup is a BT Voyager 205 with a D-Link DGL-4300. The Voyager 205 is set to the zipb bridging thingy so that the DGL-4300 sees the public IP and does all the work. I haven't managed to really stress test it (it's only 1.1mbit) but I think it's working fine so far.

My Line Atten is currently 21 and the SNR is 29. When plugged into the main faceplate this changes to 8 and 33 so I'll cable that up nicely when needed.

Now, if/when I upgrade to maxdsl I obviously want to negotiate the best speed possible. Would it be worth upgrading the modem? I'd want a basic ethernet modem with no NAT rubbish (that's what the router is for) and maybe support for ADSL2/2+ so that it has a longer lifespan.

The Home/"non-Premium" Max is 448kbps upstream. Office/Premium has a 832kbps upload rate.

Thanks. The only answer I could find on the BT site was "64-256kbps" which was probably way out of date. I get 288kbps on 1.1mbit!

Are there any ISPs that offer the full 832kbps on home packages? I'm stuck with BT for now due to contract stuff but it'd be nice to know what's available. Most ISPs seem to try and sell their packages with jargon and free wireless routers but give very little information on the technical side of what you're buying. It was a relief reading the FAQ on the Zen site.

Not really. What I said was the BTw story.

Enta do Max Premium for not a huge amount more than non-Premium though.
