Yes, yes it would.

Do you use it for mainly gaming, music, films or all of the above?

What is your budget.

That is a good entry level soundcard.

Has an inbuilt headphone amp too which is handy.

A good way to dip your toes into better audio.

Shudders at the thought of going back to onboard audio.

I'd use it primarily for gaming, but listen to music also :)

My budget is around 60-70 pound.

But I'll buy that one for now, to try out :)

I wouldn't expect night and day changes with a cheapish headset but it certainly wouldn't get any worse hehe :)

Yeah that soundcard seems fine and then possible save up for some decent headphones if you find you're still looking for better sound

As above, as DGX would be a worthwhile upgrade over the onboard audio you have, I'd imagine. I don't really know how good VIA's onboard audio solutions are. I wouldn't expect they are as good as Realtek's better offerings.

Ultimately though, it's down to the user. People have different experiences. Some find a dedicated sound card better than any onboard audio, while others find onboard just as good a dedicated sound card, except the high end ones.

Given your budget, a Xonar DX would be a very good purchase. It's a great sound card. However, given your current headset, it's rather pointless spending £60 on a sound card for use with a £30 headset. The headset or headphones play a larger part in the overall sound quality than a sound card upgrade will. £60 headset and a £30 sound card theoretically would provide better sound quality than £60 sound card and £30 headset.

There are two ways to look at it. You could either get a DGX to match your current headset, or you could spend £60 and get a DX, then upgrade the headset at a later date. If you have no intention of getting a "better" headset, then I'd just go with a DGX.

Hmm I'm not sure what to do, maybe just get a better headset now? Then at a later date get the DX?

Not entirely sure you'll get a much better headset with noticeable improvements unless you go a bit higher with the budget but others might be able to help.

The DGX seems like a good start and then save up a little for a better headset or headphones + external mic which seems to be better value for money when sound quality is the main aim.

Out of the cards mentioned if I worried only about headphone as opposed to speakers I would simply go for the DG or DGX (PCI-e). Note that if you want a built-in headphone-gain amplifier the DX does not provide this.
