Would like help on a new computer.

I can't thank the people of this forum enough! Just realised that some of the parts were OEM, so the price just went up from me getting retail parts and a SATA cable for the HDD, booooo! Oh well, eventually, the system will be mine!
 
Many OEM parts are identical to their retail versions except for the prettiness of the box they come in.

With other parts there are differences that may matter. The main ones would be the differences between OEM and retail versions of Windows, and OEM and retail processors.

If you haven’t already ordered come back and ask about the parts in question.
 
To be honest, there's big difference between a future proof PC that's bleeding edge or one that will more realistically run your games in years to come. Since software and games aren't exactly demanding right now I think any decent mid-range performance system (i.e. 2500k) will last you at least 4 years, maybe longer. You might have to review you graphics at some point but that still could be a few years off.

My Q6600 for example is still running strong with no signs of degrading. Is it bleeding edge? No. It's it still running all my games at 1920 with plenty of AA/AF - Absolutely. I only changed my 8800GTX last year :)
 
I've not ordered yet, but I have changed to a retail processor to get the heatsink. What difference is there to the OEM windows? It still comes with the product code I assume? Also, I guess I need extra cables because of some OEM drives?

OEM windows is meant for a single computer (its tied to the motherboard) without you re-using it on another pc/major upgrade of the pc.

With the Retail version you can transfer it from machine to machine without issues but people have had success in getting the OEM version reactivated by just phoning up and crying that the original motherboard died and you had to do a upgrade.

The motherboard will come with sata cables, check reviews or manufacturer websites to see whats included in a particular motherboard.
