As per thread title really.

I just downloaded the client today, but I am not exactly sure what I am supposed to do.

I have a few computers here at home that I would like to use to contribute to this, as I think it is a really good idea, and it would put my computers to a good cause when I am not using them for gaming!!!

If someone could assist me in setting this thing up, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

::edit::

My systems consist of 2 i7920 rigs o/ced to 4GHz, one with a GTX280, the other has an 8800GTX, and I will be using my old AMD dual core components to put another basic system together that will have a 6000+ X2 and an 8500GT 512MB...

::edit::

OK, I have it running on one of my systems, but it is only using 13% of my processing power, I really don't know what I am doing tbh, and I need some help, I would like it to be using all my processing power when I am not using my PC, how can I go about doing this?

Also, isn't there a GPU client available to make use of my GTX280?

And can you run the CPU client and GPU client on the same machine at the same time??

Sorry for the noobular questions!!!

Thought some one would have replied to you by now

A warm welcome to the folding team. To be a member of the team all you need to do is put the number 10 in for the team number when configuring the client / clients.

You sound as though you have downloaded the standard CPU client. This will run on one core of your i7. You have two alternatives: Run 8 separate standard clients or run the SMP client (which will give you more points) . As you have 8 cores You should be able to run multiple instances of this client. You can also run SMP under virtual Linux machines (assuming you currently use windows) which will give you even better result.

There is a GPU client that can run on your graphics cards. You may have issues with having differing GPUs in one machine - I can't say that I know much about this, but I'm sure there is some one else on the forum who will be able to help.

Hi DavyBoy, welcome to the team, you should be able to get a pretty good PPD with that lot!

To get the most PPD you want to be using the SMP (for multicore cpus) and GPU clients which can be downloaded from here.

You can use both the CPU and GPU client at the same time, if I was you I'd sort out the GPU client first as it's easier, and then the CPU. The once you get the hang of using the console sort out the SMP client.

For the GPU just download the console client, extract, save it and start it up with the -config tag and fill in the details (remembering to put team 10!). There is a good guide here with step by step instructions.

There is also the system tray GPU client, but I think it gives slightly less PPD and you wouldn't be able to have multiple GPUs.

For your i7s I think (correct me if I'm wrong here guys) to get the max PPD you would neet to run 2 (or more?) SMP clients with some kind of virtulisation software. I only have an E5200 though so not something I've ever tried or looked into!

Once you've set up a username for yourself you can check your production at http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ by searching for your username.

edit: beaten to it!

We are going through a slow period in the exciting world of the ODCP forum right now so excuse our laxadazical attitude and welcome to the team (if you are still tempted)

Also we are gearing up to try and convince all the Foldy types to switch over to Seti@home for a month to help us in a competition agains other mad crunchers in the S@NL Gauntlett. (see for more info)

Hi guys.. finally some people reply to my thread, I was thinking that no-one was folding for OcUK anymore!!!

It is a little to late for me tonight to start setting this up on my rigs but I will have a read through some of the stuff didgemaster has posted links to so I get a better understanding of what I should be doing.

I have read a little bit about it earlier on today, but I have been quite busy with other things that I didn't really find out much.

I did read that it is better to run this in Linux through virtulisation as I can get better results doing it like this, so I think this is the route I will take tbh.

It seems like a really good thing to use my computers for when I'm not using them for gaming, as it is going to a really good cause imo.

Anyway guys, I will spend the next couple of days reading through how to setup a virtual Linux environment as I have no idea how to use virtulisation yet!!!

But I am usually quite quick at picking stuff up when it comes to computers..

I must say a big thank you for the warm welcome, and I look forward to helping the OcUK Folding@Home team!

My systems should be able to do quite a lot of work if I were to use all the processing power I have right?

Also, is it possible to run both the GPU and CPU clients at the same time for even more PPD?

Thanks again guys.

Yep, you can run both CPU & GPU clients at the same time. You say you wish to run Linux by Virtualisation, I suggest that you used something called 'Notfred's Diskless Folding'. In essence it's a small 22MB Linux ISO, which is soley designed to run folding. It means there's no configuring Ubuntu etc to try and get folding working, you just turn on the VM to start and pause it to finish :)

Here is a guide for folding using 'Notfred's Diskless Folding':-

Edit:- Since you have an i7, I believe you would need to run either two or four Virtual machines to fully utilise you CPU, since many of the free Virtual Machine pieces of software limit the number of cores to two per VM (so one 'real' core and one 'HT' core - per VM). Since you have 6GB this shouldn't be a problem (768MB each).

Excellent Happy, thanks a lot for that mate ;)

I will have a good read through this stuff so that I know exactly what I am doing.

I look forward to helping you guys!
