Would like to try a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game again - recommendations?

Wotcha folks.

I've got all the Stalker games, (SoC, CS, CoP) and played through them on my aged PC. Absolutely loved the atmosphere in them. Now I have a decent CPU and GPU (3750K, HD7950) I want to replay one of them with everything maxed, make use of mods etc.

I've been away from the games for absolutely ages and have no idea what modders have been up to so am looking for a recommendation for which to play, fully modded, for the best looking and playing game. Quite happy to entertain total conversion mods if they are recommended, but would like to preserve the STALKER feeling if possible.

I'm asking rather than just getting some and trying, because re-downloading all 3 would be a bit of a pain on my slow ass internet if there's one that's likely to be head and shoulders above the others.
 
Although the second version will be out in Q2, I would still recommend 'Misery' for CoP. That, imo, is the most polished mod I've played. Another very good shout is 'SGM 2.1' for CoP. For SoC, I would probably go for 'People Soup' - which should be more stable now, and for CS I thoroughly enjoyed the CS mod pack. I've played many others, but imho, these are the ones that have stood out the most for me. Some of the other mods have great potential, but poor stability due to them being beta versions was almost inevitable.



To sum up, you'll get going the quickest by opting for Misery (comes with its own installer). Looks fantastic.

SGM isn't the most easy one to install (thought it's not difficult at all), but is probably my favourite Stalker mod so far due to both graphical and gameplay changes, extra quests, variety and so on. It has free play, too.






People Soup is the most adventurous mod I've tried, and I thought it was great. Unfortunately, it wasn't that stable at all when I last tried it. As I say, it's an ambitious mod, and it's the biggest Stalker game universe thus far, and what makes it such an exciting mod to play is that it's constantly having new ideas implemented.

CS mod pack was stable once I uninstalled microsoft update KB2670838. If you don't, Dx10 / 10.1 will crash a lot. I completed this last week.

Out of interest how interlinked are the STALKER games, I played a bit of SoC but then installed a Complete mod which made everything incredibly dark and I kinda gave up on it. So at a guess I was maybe around 3hrs in. I fancy trying one of the other games (I own them all) but if it is tied in with the story would rather wait until I've completed the original game (so could be waiting a long time :))
