Hey, sorry if this has been asked to death I do not know what to search and I dont have the time to read up reviews etc to know what the best overclocking pc is at the moment.

I would like to upgrade to a core2 duo!

Currently I have the following:

Asrock dual sata II Motherboard
Opteron 146 overclocked to 2.75ghz
2 gig OCZ DDR Ram 2-3-2-5 @ 183mhz (asrock mobo is awful at 2.7+ghz cpu)
430 Antec truepower powersupply
Nvidia 7800GT 256mb PCI-E

Im looking to get the most overclockable core 2 duo (I think it is E6600? not quite sure) and also a decent overclockable motherboard that wont have little quirks like my current asrock has that prevent me from reaching the optimum max performance. It needs to have a decent bios aswell, and 2 IDE's ports would be ideal so I can still put the dvd drive on another IDE from my hard drive.

So I will require the CPU, Motherboard, and decent ram that would be a good combination, and also a new powersupply as I think 430W is not enough to overclock well.

Budget is realistically maximum possible with VAT and delivery is £500. If though I need to go over for stuff like a decent cpu HSF then its okay. I use the computer to play Counter Strike Source (no other games, just counter strike source) and I want the best possible fps with graphics on high. I also use it for html/web design and general browsing.

Im looking to achieve 3+ghz on the core2 duo.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance this is a big time saver!

Hi mate, I just brought my system last week and im well happy with it.

E6300 1.86Ghz - mines now at 3.15 very easily
Gigabyte DS3 mobo

Im running an Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro, also check out the Scythe Ninja and Tuniq Tower as they seem to be favourites round here.

Memory im running G.Skill PC6400 2 x 1Gb Cas4, the Geil is also very good value.

All of the above can be brought from £365 upwards

There are people running much higher than me but its so fast at 3Ghz that im more than pleased, theres also lots of guides on here to help you out.

HTH

Nick

My e6600 did quite easily. I'm at 3.015 and with 335 FSB. Piece of cake really. Decent cooler (as mentioned above) a little extra voltage on the vcore (I'm on 1.28) and try to keep the temps below 60 under orthos load.

Follow the basic guide in the overclocking forum and you can't go wrong. :)

These were suggested to me so may be of help for ideas to you, bare in mind I'm a newbie but if you take alook at my "Another new build thread: 6600" you'll see where I got these from:

MB: Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (Has the IDE's you want) £82.24 inc VAT

PCU: Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) £204.44 inc VAT

RAM: GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit, on Offer this week at £111.61 inc VAT

PSU: Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU £103.39 inc VAT

Total = £501.68

I'd do this except downgrade the PSU to a 520W Corsair then buy some CAS4 GeiL with the money you save. It'll overclock so much better, and the smaller PSU will be more than fine.

unless intend on having 2 gpx

Well heres my thoughts a little different than above.

CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
AFAIK This is the best clocking Core 2 Duo and a hell of a lot cheaper than the E6600
MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Chose this as I don't know much about the Asus 650i Chipset Mobo, and I have this Mobo myself and it clocks excellently and it's a low price.
RAM: GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
Great value RAM and clocks well with the Mobo and CPU I've chosen.
PSU: Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)
Excellent PSU, great quality, silent and has 5 year warranty. A must have if your wanting to overclock.
CPU Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
Great CPU cooler and a low price, essential for getting that E4300 over 3Ghz.
SATA HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 200GB ST3200820AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM
I have included a SATA-II Hard Drive as I think you would benefit from it massively.

All the above comes to £475.75 inc delivery.

Ah thank guys, so in your opinions, would this be worth the money and allow me to achieve 3ghz+ with an overclock?

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

Im going to be putting this with a 7800GT and although it might be the bottleneck maybe? I am convinced it is enough to run counter strike source with full graphics, its just that the CPU I have just now doesnt seem to want to cope.

Thanks again!
