Would the difference be huge...

So its about time I upgraded my trusty old Phenom II x2 that has served me for the past few years unlocked to quad, and for the past few months running on quite high volts 1.57v @ 4ghz :P

Its done well but I'm beginning to see dips below 30fps in the games I play on max, recently the Final Fantasy 14 beta.

So I've been looking around and reading a few reviews and I have settled on 2 possibilities.

i5 4670k + Radeon 7950 + Giga z87 D3HP

or

i5 3570k + Radeon 7870 Tahiti + Giga z77 D3H

I have read around a few review sites, and as far as I can tell there's not much between the processors when it comes to gaming, clock for clock and apparently on average the 3570k can overclock higher!?

I've read also there is not a huge difference in the GPU's at 1080p which is what I game at. But Im not completely sure.

You see there's a difference of £90 in the two builds for me (a combination of parts from OCUK and what some friends have going, new, sealed) the Ivy Bridge being the cheapest but will there be that much difference!?

If the Haswell system will go that extra mile, and perhaps last that extra generation I might be tempted to invest the extra now. But if the Ivybridge is bound to last as long I will be inclined to go for that.

Any one have any opinions or a more informed knowledge on the subject would appreciate it!?

Well with Ivy you have hit the end of the socket. There will be no more CPUs for that socket. For Haswell there will be Broadwell so you have some kind of upgradeablilty in the future.

What make is your current PSU?

The PSU I have running this Phenom machine is quite a cheap Coolermaster unit that I paid just under £35 for.

I have an unopened XFX Pro 550w downstairs along with an Antec Kúhler H2O 620 watercooler waiting for this new build.

The 4670k and the 7950 combo is better by a decent amount, mainly due to the 7950.
I'd definitely think it's worth the extra 90, although I'd inquire about getting the MSI 7950 and the OCUK Mega bundle.

Thanks,

So I can understand Ivybridge is the last of its socket, and the Broadwell chips will be the same socket as Haswell but would not an overclocked 3570k with a 7950 fly me through both Haswell and Broadwell?

As I am now thinking of picking up a 7950 (thanks for pointing out that mega bundle) with a new Ivy chip from a mate, saving me just over £50 on the 4670k...

Unless someone can point any benefit of getting a Haswell with a 7950 pretty much just for 1080p gaming thats worth it, and by worth it the Haswell option will be just over 1/3rd or 33% more than the Ivy option for me!

The only reason i see to go for the haswell option is the ability to upgrade to Broadwell in the future, for performance alone the price isn't worth it..

If you know you won't be tempted to get a boradwell chip id get the Ivy and reap the rewards of extra money, and maybe get a 7970. :)
