Would the gfx on SS2 ruin the experience?

Hey guys,

I really fancy playing system shock 2, but im fearful that the gfx would really be a let down for me. Im not saying im all about the gfx, but gfx as old as SS2's look pretty bad nowadays. What do you lot think?

I also checked on moddb for texture upgrade mods, etc :

http://games.moddb.com/66/system-shock-2/mods/

Both look pretty good - has anyone tried these? Are there any problems with them?

Cheers :D

ss2 looks great the way it is, rebirth and shtup are popular mods though, I wouldn't use them the first time through though.

Im just thinking that the 1st time through with crap graphics may sour the deal.

So, youve played it with the mods - how is it? Any bad bugs or anything?

Also can I use both the rebirth mod and the textures pack on the website on the OP at the same time?

I played it using the rebirth mod.

My view: yes, the poor graphics do detract from the experience somewhat - unless it was nothing special to start with that is.

Bear in mind it also only supports 16bit colour and I had to hack the .ini file to get any resolution other than 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768.

I played it for a few hours and while there is a bit of tension in places, the audio recordings are cool and it has a fairly complex inventory system, it just doesn't compare to say Deus Ex which came out only a year later. I know graphics don't make a game but when they are so shoddy (worse than even 1998 games such as Unreal, Forsaken and Halflife) it does but a dampner on things somewhat.

Hmm, i think ill have to give it a go - cheers pal :)

The inv system is practically the same as deus ex :/

The game on awhole is better than bioshock but worse than dues ex

Nah, stick the rebirth mod and texture mod on right from the start - the originals look really dated at this stage, and the new ones do nothing to detract from the atmosphere.

Still a hugely playable game.

Perhaps I phrased that badly - I was listing positive points for the game as a whole, followed by the fact that I deem it vastly inferior to Deus Ex (as a whole).

i cant find my orignal SS2 and would love to play through it again with the new mods ... although ive heard its very unstable in vista ? hope thats wrong
