I am sending my faulty asus ati radeon 4870x2 back to asus for rma soon.

I opened the gpu up and applied paste to of the chips which has the led lights near i have the tri-fan edition however 3 of the fans do not seem to work now so i have a desktop fan blowing at it to keep it cool right now.

Would they notice i opened it up?
 
I'm going to second this. Anyway nothing to loose. If they don't notice you get a new card. If they do you get your old card back and are down the postage.

Try buying an after market heatsink/cooler for it? I don't whether there is one released for the x2. I'm sure someone knows more about it than me :p

There are none available at the moment.

Removing the cooler from the card invalidates the warranty and these days, with the massively complicated 18-screw, 12-latch cooling solutions it's fairly obviously if someone has taken it off.
 
Well i put it all back on correctly, the card was with a previous owner before me so i will just say it must have been them trying to modify it at some point or something.
 
They may ask you to take it up with the previous owner if you say the fans weren't working when you received it.

Can't imagine how you managed to stop two of the three fans working - especially since they're plugged in as before? Weird??? :confused:

Did you get any thermal paste in the fan's contact pins?

not a chance mate, i had another look at the fans earlier reconnected them all none of the pins are broke so i do not understand this.

The shopped i guy bought it from knows i bought it from him and i have the credit note.

So got no problems with them sending it off to asus for RMA.

Just hope asus dont get to funny about it lol.
