I was planning on ordering my parts for my i7 build next week, but reading those reports on the i5 i think it would be stupid to buy an i7 atm (unless your doing encoding & editing etc).

Im thinking ill just stick with my Q6600 and just see if i can get more out of it, but i remember when i bought the system 2 years ago, i seemed to hit a wall at 3.4GHz, i think it was the northbridge (mosfet) of the IP35 Pro mobo holding me back, as anything higher than 3.4GHz and the temps got stupidly hot, im talking about 95-100c+ here. So what i was thinking of doing was get some of the components i was going to get for my new build and add them to my current system,
namely:

275GTX
Corsair H50 cpu cooler
Corsair 850w PSU
120GB SSD

But was also think to get more juice out of the Q6600 was to buy a new mobo (poss DDR3) as the P35 it quite old, would this be a crazy move to get a new 775 socket mobo now this late in its life?

Thing is, im not 100% on which 775 mobo is regarded the best, X48, P45, P43/P31, G41/G31 and then which brand, and if its worth going down the DDR3 route which would mean new ram also

i5 is 1156, not 775. It's pointless buying a new motherboard now if you're planning on getting an i5 in literally weeks time. I thought that X48 was the best though, and DFI do a good Laparty one for about £80.

If your thinking about going I5 then it would silly purchasing another S775 motherboard unless your going to keep it for a spare.

Get the other parts ready for when I5 arrives.

850w PSU is a bit overkill unless your thinking about SLI or crossfire, even then a 750w will be more than enough.

If i did get a new mobo now, i wouldnt be getting an i5 for a good while, after xmas probably, as id wait for more mobos for 1156 to come out and maybe a stepping of the i5. I dont think its a good idea to buy new tech as soon as its released, id like to let it mature a bit, and work out any kinks in the cpu/mobo. The, Foxconn BlackOps Intel X48 looks good??

The blackops X48 is a excellent overclocking mobo, especially at the price it is at now, used to be an awfull lot more then it is.

But ideally it would be better to go for a P45 chipset as its the newer one out of P45/X48.

I would suggest any of the Asus P5Q range, any reveiw of these you read they all come highly rated.

Yeah, but it uses DDR3. Just hold onto your money, it will be literally weeks until i5 comes out.

But would i really notice a difference in gaming, from a q6600 @ 3.4 to a i5 at similar OC

Whats the major differences between the, Asus P5Q-E, Asus P5Q Pro Turbo, Asus P5Q Deluxe?

i5 is winning me over already. It's literally intel's version of AMD AM3 phenom II quad. You can get the mobo, cpu and ddr3 dual channel rams for about £350-£380 I think. If you can salvage whatever you got from your existing computer i.e. rom drive, graphics card, case etc then you can have a working system for approx £500.

I too urge you to wait a few more weeks. The i5 will be the new overclocking king thanks to its low voltage.

i5 will be Dual channel then, not triple?? Why have they decided to dump the triple and go back to dual?

It's for marketing perposes. It's literally intel coming in smiling and telling AMD fans that this is the way to do it. Huge overclocking headroom, low power consumption, cheap and comparable performance to i7 920.

If they designed it with DDR3 tri channel in mind, it would be too similar to the i7 plus making the whole package pricey and less attractive. i5 is here to to directly challenge AMD's Phenom II quads, so price/performance are the most important factors.
