Howdy,

I am designing and building a prototype fan controller.

It is software controlled and based on profiles for apps. The idea is that you can create a 4 channel fan profile for any app you want to run.

So if you are doing 3D work, you may only want the side GPU case fan on full and the other on low.

3D gaming may require them all on high etc...

Normal PC use means they are all on low (unless the temp sensors want them on high)

Here is what it offers:

Hardware:
USB Connection.
4 fan channels.
2 fan speeds (may be more in the pipeline), default low, or high.
Front panel showing fan status via LEDs.
Temp sensing (only for auto fan speed increase when no profile loaded).

Software:
lightweight controller software, hopefully less than 1MB.
Ability to create a 4 channel fan profile for any app.
App launcher with simple and elegant UI.
When no profile is loaded, you can toggle the fans high or low via a tray icon (XP)

Would that be something that you would consider using in your rig?

TA.

so similar to laptop power profiles, that control screen brightness, HDD activity, CPU throttling etc etc,

nice idea, I like it, and yes would consider one in my rig :D

Yup it is a bit similar. I have 4 case fans in my rig, and when I want to play Crysis etc, I have to pop open the case door, tweek the fan speeds, then boot up the game.

With the contraption I am making, you create a profile for the game, set the fan speeds - save it. Now when you want to play the game you launch it and the fans will spin up to whatever speed you set them.

I would certainly use one, but doesnt speedfan do pretty much what your talking about minus the profile for apps part?

Please forgive my ignorance, i am merely a learner :(

Yes and yes.

The app profiles are there so you don't have to manually set fan speeds in order to use an app.

When I get some bits made up and coded, I will post it in action, that may better explain what it does.

What I'd like to see is a fan controller that can switch fans off, my fan controller already automatically changes fan speeds to maintain the pre programmed temperatures, but I'd like it to switch them off when they are not needed.

are the fans going to be plugged into this 'device'

12v and 5v are standard, so having 12v, 7v, 5v and 0v are standard too

keep us informed :)
