Would this break my nice new cpu?

Say, for instance, i plugged the the 4 pin plug of the 20+4pin connectors of my power supply into the cpu's dedicated 4 pin power input socket instead of the cpu 4pin connector on the psu, would it break the cpu? and explain why when i now turn the computer on after rectifying the mistake, the pc outputs no display, no beep sequence and the caps lock lights wont flash on and off when asked?

If the answer is yes, feel free to laugh.
 
mine just says 12 and 24, in hindsight it was pretty obvious, but i didn't realise the CPU is 12v, all made sense after I found that out..........

So do we think the mobo is shanked as well? I really hope not, reckon I can get away with getting a replacement CPU for free, but if they're both bummed, it could be a little harder to explain.
