Thermal paste on gpu, looks like it is touching the pins. I'm not going to open it up though as it is under warrenty. I only got it returned from RMA today but I don't know if it is brand new or my old one they attempted to fix. Now it works for a bit but then the pc restarts and the gpu fan goes at 100% until I turn off the pc. It isn't overheating though nor is it a psu issue. The reason I RMA'd it in the first place was because of a buzzing noise in the fan, now it has a new issue.

Why do MSI feel the need to apply so much paste?

Sounds like it needs RMAing again, sometimes you just get a bad batch, even if they have a 1 in a million failure rate you can still get two sequential failures.

I'm not sure if it is my old card though. Does look spotless and there was quite a lot of dust on it when I sent it.

You would expect them to at-least test it first before sending me a card.

if its your original card they will have tested it but if its new they will have just grabbed one of the shelf. did it come sealed like ta new card or did the box look in the same condition you returned it in?

You are running at stock arnt you?

The box wasn't the same as the one I sent it in. The box I sent was the one it came in when I bought it with accessories, now I don't have that any more which is annoying, they sent me a small white box that says msi graphics card on the side.

I can't boot windows any more, it seems to have died. Looks like I will have to RMA again or hope I can have a refund.

It has to be running at stock, I just installed windows fresh. My 4890 works fine when I plug that in. The bios is on fail safe settings so I really can't think of anything else except the card is buggered.

Would you say the thermal paste is causing the problem????

Sounds like they sent you a refurbished but not fixed unit, if that's possible?, only thing you can really do is send it back.

I'm guessing they may have replaced the cooling part of the card explaining why there is zero dust. They probably applied the thermal paste themselves clearly not knowing what they are doing. If they were to send me a brand new one wouldn't it come in a normal box with instructions, etc?

Everything i've had RMA replaced has come as a brand new retail box, send it back and get a refund try HIS or saphire out instead
