Would this count as doing a "growse"?

Just got a 580EX II and this thing is awesome. I haven't had a chance to use it in anger yet but the power this thing gives out is certainly impressive. The second picture is just an example sheer power this flash has as it was taken at 1/1 power in pitch black with the wide angle diffuser deployed.

Does anyone know what stroboscopic mode could be used for? I can understand why you might need 10hz or below but it goes up to 199hz which is very cool yet I can't figure out what creative opportunities this gives.

for a definition of stroboscopic effect that even I can understand!

grats on the flash - a very early purchase for me was a standalone flash, and now I couldn't live without it. onboard flash is nothing in comparison to a good quality separate. have fun with front and rear curtaining with that bad boy!

you git :p

I really really want the 430ex but I have other more necessary expenditures at the moment :(

****!

Yes, I think that counts :) Although technically you *intended* to buy it.... :p

How much?

Surprisingly cheap at £250 posted brand new (In England as well) which is much better than the £400 you would have to pay on the high street. Obviously I can't say where I got it from but they're a well known HK retailer who occasionally sell items from their agent in London.

Hows the dust / weather sealing on it? (Not seen one in the flesh yet)

Hopefully I won't have to find out! The redesigned hot shoe is very nice though, full metal foot with a very quick and secure mounting. You need the new 1d MkIII to get full sealing though as the mounting point has to fit the little rubbery shroud on the foot.

well there's a thinly veiled attempt at justifying a 1D MkIII purchase if ever I saw one!!

No chance!

My next purchase is going to be something much bigger and much whiter...

580EX stands for 58 meters, and in theory it can light an object 58 meters away (not including background). Ever tried putting it against your skin and trigger the flash? My mate at uni thought it would be funny to do that with my 550EX, little did they know the thing gets HOT when it goes off.

When I was little I was stupid enough to put film APS cameras onboard flash units to my naked eye and fire it just so I could see purple and green for about 9 hours.

I think if I tried that with my 580 I would have to give up photography.

Yes, I just tried that. It's quite warm but not really painful, you can really feel the heat though. As for trying it on my eye no way. I don't fancy a nice green square burnt into my eye for the next few days.
