Would this mess cause problems?

I have attached a pic of what is beneath my desk. Would this pile of cables adversely affect my internet signal? The router plugs straight into the adsl socket on the wall. The pc's are connected by ethernet cable.

Thanks,

I would say it would.

Might not effect any wireless signals but is more than likely to effect your ADSL sync rate.

We had a power cable cross over our phone extension lead and that really messed up the ADSL

All that dust won't be good for the kit either lol

Get it tidied ;)

I followed your advice and I moved the router and the stats have changed:

Before

Downstream:
Connection Speed: 3552kbps
Line Attenuation: 35db
Noise Margin: 6db

After

Downstream:
Connection Speed: 2912kbps
Line Attenuation: 35db
Noise Margin: 10db

Is this an improvement or is it worse?

It is worse by around 1mb. Bare in mind its now tidy? I think I would rather have a tidy place than a mess and sync 1mb less.

I thought the connection speed was based upon:

a) Line Attenuation

b) Noise Margin

Line Attenuation has stayed the same but Noise Margin has improved, as I understand a higher Noise Margin is better.

Surely the connection speed should have gone the other way?

seems the wrong way to me. Are you sure that is right.

Check all the cables and make sure they are not dodgy or anything.

It might be that since you started poking around you have bust a cable that was being held together by what was around it etc lol

It does seem rather odd. I was having internet connection problems earlier in the day. Maybe I have been "reassessed" downwards? Or does the router itself reassess what speed it can connect at?

It is possible that you would get slowed down a bit if you kept unplugging or switching it on or off.

Have you tried swapping the cables etc

Ok, I just rebooted the router. Now I have this:

Downstream:
Connection Speed: 5408bps
Line Attenuation: 35db
Noise Margin: 6db

That is much better! Do you think the router is checking what it can connect at or something?

Thanks for the tip about keeping other cables clear. Looks like it has made a huge difference. :D My fastest connection for years!!

Thats more like it.

The kit at BT's end will monitor the speeds at which you can connect and adjust the speeds where necessary to maintain a stable line. So turning it off lots and swapping cables can effect it in the short term, but it will usually return to normal as stability returns.

Hope this helps, tolien can probably explain it better

Aaron

EDIT: I want a before and after pic lol
