Is this a reliable PSU that would be capable of powering new motherboards and a quad-core processor?

It should fit fine and its more than enough for your rig plus a quad

It's a standard ATX size... so yes it will fit. I did note that the cables are "extra" long for tower cases so you might have a struggle finding somewhere to stow the un used cables in your present case. Do a quick measure up of your present PSU and compare them with the sizes quoted in the specs

ie TX650W Dimension: 5.9"(W) x 3.4"(H) X 5.5"(L)

You may consider spending the extra 16 quid and get the HX (modular) one instead.

Both will power a modern MB and quad CPU,
