Hi all. I was looking originally at a monitor upgrade but noticed this TV and wondered if this would be a better choice.

Hitachi HXT12U 42 In Full HD 1080p FVHD LED TV + Smart Apps

Smart TV.
Screen size: 42in (106cm).
Resolution 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Motion rate 50Hz.
Response time 15 milliseconds.
Viewing angle 178/178 degrees

With the motion rate of 50hz compared to the 60+ of standard monitors would this be an issue in gaming?

Im not sure about the link but id be safe and remove it. Replace it with the manufacturers one please...

To answer your question, I feel 1080p @ 42" is a bit big foe gaming. It just won't look clear, the picture will be too streched. And 50hz too, you'll notice the it even more. If its being used as a monitor mainly id say get a good 27"-30" one

What kind of gaming and from what distance?

It's no substitute for a monitor if you'll be sitting near it as the resolution is very low for the size, nor is it a good option for e.g. FPS games with a low refresh rate and slow response rate, but if you're playing from far away it might be a decent option.

For gaming only get a monitor as Doomed advises. Without spending silly money a TV just doesn't cut it for high end PC gaming

I wouldn't bother mate, I tried my 32" 1920 x 1080, from my bedroom for a while until I could afford triple 23's and it was OK, but nothing special. With TV's they are designed to be sat away from, so the pixels are bigger, than what you would get on a monitor. You've got to think that a 42" 1080p tv, and a 23" 1080p monitor have the same pixel count, so a monitor will beet the tv in sharpness everytime.

I have to butt in here and say that I game on a 50inch TV and that the experience is faultless for me. I am about 7ft away from the screen though and it is a Panasonic plasma display so the response time is good.
Text is crystal clear too.

But my sons TV is a Philips 42 inch and compared to the Panasonic it's years behind, the text is blurry and really doesn't cut it for pc use. Therefore it depends on the TV being used and for something like this it would be ideal to try before you buy.

If sitting closer to the tv then a monitor is a must like has been said.
